Which Luton Town Players Would You Sell To Raise Funds For A Striker?

You may have noticed that although Luton earned a draw, away to Huddersfield Town, on Saturday, there is a suspicion among the support, we could have done better.

Indeed, it is a tone that is prevalent in a couple of articles we have already published today – luton-boss-happy-with-points-accumulated-on-the-road-in-a-busy-week – and – luton-town-supporters-have-mixed-opinions-regarding-point-taken-at-huddersfield-town.

The disappointment comes courtesy of how Luton, when going forward, gave the ball away far too easily and when it came to chances that fell their way, they could not take them.

At this level, chances can be few and far between, a failure to take them can have dire consequences.

Recently, here at Vital Luton Town, we ran an article – luton-town-face-a-conundrum-come-january – where we suggested, on the back of scoring less than a goal a game, the club needed to seriously consider bringing in a striker, once the January transfer window closes.

However, we are also acutely aware that finances, due to the current pandemic driven situation, could be scarce –
fingers-crossed-luton-town-can-ride-out-the-implications-of-this-second-wave-of-covid-19.

With that being the case, and as Chris Winter suggested in a comment left recently, the Hatters may have to consider the option of parting company with several players in the current squad, fringe players, to raise the necessary funds to purchase a striker.

If that were the case, we have a simple question for you all – which of the current Luton Town squad would you be willing to sacrifice to raise the cash for a striker?

Please feel free to drop your views on the above subject matter in the comment facility beneath this article.

Pelly Ruddock and Elliot Lee both not Championship level.

  • Alan says:

To be fair against rotherham we were awful 1st half without pelly….midfield is light weight without him. I know he has his faults but he gets through a hell of a lot of work….also you can only sell, if people wanna buy…

    • Hightown HQ1 says:

When Pelly is shows he is a liability its ‘the teams fault’ yet when the team performance is poor its ‘because Pelly wasn’t playing’ right??? So why not look at the 1st half of the Rotherham game as part of a ‘change process’… it takes a few games for any team selection to adjust…doesn’t it?
Its not that Pelly doesn’t have some qualities he 100% does, its just he also has weaknesses that get exposed at this level (ie touch, work rate, consistency and reaction speed when things go wrong)
If we want to go to that next level we need a more complete kind of player.

      • Alan says:

I didnt say it was the teams fault, I meant at that particular game we were better when pelly came on….if you look at our midfield they all suffer from losing possession to easy hence why the service to our forwards is struggling.

afternoon MH, i’d start the clear out by getting rid of long term crocks Galloway & O’Kane, neither would be missed and we have better options in both positions.
Next up Shinnie & Moncur, Shinnie isn’t up to the pace of the Championship and dwells on the ball to long hence now being at Charlton, Moncur isn’t a 90 min player who’s appearance on Saturday was the first time he’s started consecutive league games since signing and 1 goal in the last year say’s it all. Next out the door for me would be Elliot Lee, a striker who’s played out of position but doesn’t score goals when he does play as a striker plus Jordan Clark is a better player where NJ play’s Lee.
That’s 5 x wages saved to go towards a striker with Championship experience.

We need to stop accommodating midfielders and start playing two forwards together… Collins is a great worker but is often out of position. We need to have a partnership up top. One who will do more work and another who will be in the right positions. Hylton hasn’t scored for a long time, but it’s because he isn’t playing with anyone to compliment what he offers. How often do we have more than 1 or two in the box from crosses? We can’t play our way through every team

  • Alan says:

Hi all I’ve said on here before, I would try hylton and collo together for a couple of games. It is definitely correct we hardly ever have bodies in the penalty area…

  • Colin Logan says:

We have to many midfielders .For me Hilton should go along with Lee neither have what it takes at this level midfield wise Shinnie should be on the list lack of goals is a concern NJ will know this and hopefully do something about it in January . I have to say relegation will not be a worry this season but like other people have said we need to move to the next level and to do this money has to be found for a goal scorer

  • Chris winter says:

Hi all, nice to see my idea about who goes is causing so much discussion. An some interesting ideas. Can’t see how we can get rid of Galloway or o’kane we don’t own o’kane an who would buy a crock. Pelly seems to be causing some debate lol. Shinnie seems a fav to sell an Lee but I can’t see us getting big fees for either so I would suggest at least 3 more players would have to go. Here’s something radical to ponder we have 1 possible player who could command a decent fee in millions. As there was interest from Turkey for him an we have a ready made replacement at the club should we sell him?

  • Alan says:

Hi chris, i see you have noticed me trying to stick up for pelly…lol….i agree with you, sluga is the obvious name that would raise a few quid….

  • Danny says:

we do that by paying them off Chris, O’kane only has 7 months to run of the 18 month agreement with leeds and Galloway was a free and won’t cost much pay his contract up too.

  • Chris winter says:

Hi Danny, yes we could but it’s still pennies an we need £sss for a competent striker!!! Which is why I suggested sluga as Alan has twigged. 1 player needed to go. With all the games to come an when more injuries pile up an they will if we get rid of 4 5 6 players then. We have a threadbare squad to get to the end of the season. That’s what happened to Charlton do we want that no. So no matter what our opinions of players we need everyone. So the keeper is the one player we can let go

    • Mad Hatter says:

This time last season there were plenty who would have paid his taxi fare to the airport!

      • Chris winter says:

Hi mh, your right mate but what a difference now lol an as I have said he is the 1 player we have a replacement for. An with such a small squad every player is needed no matter what our opinion of them. Certainly in our position

  • Danny says:

yeah fair point Chris, i guess we’re stuck with the dead wood till next season. It’s worth noting both duds O’kane & Galloway were Graeme Jones signings. I don’t think many would object to selling Sluga and re-investing the money in a much needed new striker with Shea ready and waiting in the wings.

  • Alan says:

Good to hear we all agree on some points. Sluga has worked hard and done really well though…hands up I was one of his harshest critics this time after year…

  • Chris winter says:

Hi Alan, don’t be to hard on your self. We all know now that sluga was in an insidious position due to gj. As I said at the time

  • Danny says:

lol ……. i think most of us were alan, he was looking like another dud signing but now seeing some of the saves he’s now pulling off especially the one in the 1st half versus rotherham he was quality to claw that one away and keep it at 0-0.
Decembers fixtures look very tough with 9 x games in 32 days between Dec 2nd – Jan 2nd looks absolutely ridiculous and could have a big impact on our season.

    • Chris winter says:

Hi Danny, that’s exactly right so if we sell players how do we replace them lol at least if sluga went shea is an adequate replacement. Simples!! Although I believe now he is number 1 keeper for us an would rather keep him than sell but if needs must then he has to go sadly.

      • David Plummer says:

What a load of rubbish you all have been tossing around, keep your best players at all times unless someone comes in with a huge offer, get rid of the dead wood first, and just to be clear on Pelly and Lee, two hard workers who could fit in any team, not perfect but could you afford better?
We insist on playing kaz but is he worth wages just for a few minutes of magic?

        • Chris winter says:

Hi David, just to be clear you would advocate getting rid of 4 maybe 6 players from the squad to fund a striker. When games are coming up every 3 days when we only have a small squad that would be decimated by 2 or 3 injuries. That is exactly what happened to Charlton last season. Where as a single player for whom we have good cover in shea is a bad idea to be selling. We’ll you obviously think we are relegation fodder already!!! I do agree about pelly an Lee though. Sorry mate but this was a theoretical exercise an if you don’t get that then you maybe should not bother replying again

          • David Plummer says:

You haven’t any idea have you pal!
I’ve seen brilliant players play for town get snapped up by bigger clubs and we then have fringe players to replace them, not good enough if you want to succeed then you have to have a team of top players, and what a load of rubbish to suggest I would see them relegated.

          • Chris winter says:

Mr plummer it seems has this idea that because he’s seen all our best players sold in the last few years that he’s an expert on luton town. Now I’ve no idea how long he’s been a supporter. But I go back to Allan brown as manager. An since then we have always had to sell good players an buy cheap. That’s due to a succession of bad owners with the intention of ripping off the club. Now we are in the hands of good owners who will not let the club go into financial meltdown. An this gentleman when we put up our opinion of what we would like to see happen has the gaul to say we talk rubbish an I have no idea. Then says we must keep good players an buy good players an sell less able players what is this man on???? Did he not read my point that selling 4 or 5 players to get 1 striker in would deplete our squad just when we need everyone fit. My god if we did it his way relegation would be a cert. God save me from people like thid

        • Kaz fan says:

would those be the same few minutes from Kaz which won us the away game at Hull enabling us to have a fighting chance to stay in the Championship ?

          • David Plummer says:

            To the Kaz fan.
I didn’t say I wasn’t a fan of Kaz I just mused the question. I personally think we have had some great players over the years and some just average but they all seem to give everything for the Town whilst they are here.

  • Danny says:

sometimes you can’t see the wood for trees mate 🙂

    • David Plummer says:

      Mr Winter.
You ask for peoples opinions and then start an argument when their view is different to yours, I agree with most of your last statement regarding the running of Luton town F C , I just disagree with your formula for creating a successful football team, for your information I have supported Luton town since I was old enough to kick a football (leather with laces) and I have many friends who ‘s opinions differ from mine regarding the Town, but they are prepared to discuss it without coming to blows.

      • Chris winter says:

Hi David, maybe you should try explaining more clearly what you’re trying to say as all appear to be saying is the same as what was said earlier in the discussion an no one dissed each other just pointed out the reasons why one idea was not as God as another. Your first post accused us of talking rubbish an I had no idea according to you. Yet you then when I point out yet again a reasoned argument against your idea. You accuse me of threatening a bout of fisticuffs. Which at no point did I. I suggest if you dislike this site so much because we don’t meet your high ideals then leave an don’t bother posting
