Last week, here on Vital Luton Town, we covered the possibility that a Kenilworth Road favourite could be heading for the exit at the end of the season.

Our article – Luton Town Must Make Their Minds Up Over The Future Of This Striker = covered the fact that Danny Hylton has yet to be offered a new deal with his current one expiring soon.

Using our poll facility to gauge your opinion and asking the question:

Should Luton Town Offer Danny Hylton A New Contract?

we found that 79% believed the striker should be given a new deal, with 14% thinking otherwise and 7% sat on the fence.

But, following the publishing of our article, several interesting comments were left by those who frequent the site, two of which I’ve reproduced below as they provide a decent basis for discussion.

The first, courtesy of Garstang Hatter, who remarked:

“Given that “everything that moves is for sale” and we got rid of our manager and coaching staff to cut costs, I would expect all of our out-of-contract players to be departing the club to further reduce our costs. There is a much bigger picture here than just DH, much as we all appreciate and will remember what he has done for the club.”

And the second coming from Chris Winter who remarked:

“I think that it will come down to finishing the season whenever that is. And then apart from 5 or 6 currently in contract. I foresee a complete clear out of players and a squad of maybe 19 or 20 first team players and with a few under 23 players remaining. This will be all the club will be able to afford. New recruits will be on lower wages and there will be a plethora of out of work players looking for a new club desperate for work.”

Are Luton Town, once again, on the cusp of mounting a financial survival campaign?

Courtesy of this damned COVID-19 pandemic, is the great work carried out in recent years set to be decimated?

Could the building of Power Court be, subsequently compromised?

Let’s get a healthy debate going and see what your opinions on the questions raised are.

I think a wage cap for each division is a sensible idea and would help all clubs .the doing away with agents would also be a money maker .or the elf puting a surcharge on any transactions .?

    • Mad Hatter says:

I’d love to know just how much money agents, over the years, have taken out of the game! I bet it is a scandalous amount.

  • Abbothehatter says:

Power Court needs the development money from Newlands but few will be investing in new office blocks or retail space for some time. Therefore Power Court is still years away from starting.
A lot of clubs will be shedding all out of contract players at the end of June. Some EFL clubs will go out of business and even some who renain might have to go semi-pro.

    • steve says:

.the main priority is to get through this situation with our club still alive which i would guess is not a 100% guarantee depending on how long this carries on and when fans will be allowed back.unfortunately power court is the least of our problems right now we as fans should get used to the fact we will be playing at the kenny for a good few years yet but at same time thanking gary sweet and the board for keeping our beloved club alive.

Once again,Survival is the important thing Gary Sweet’s comments about this being the “biggest crisis the Club have ever faced” ( And let’s face it we have had a few in our time ) has set alarm bells ringing. I would have thought that most EFL clubs are in a precarious situation so why should Luton’s position be worse than most. Is it because that everything financially was totally tied in with Power Court and Newlands ? Obviously, it goes without saying that ,even 6 months ago nobody on this earth could have predicted what has happened. However, Mr.Sweet has often made a point about Honesty and Transparency in the past, so if my suspicions are true I think we Hatters fans should be told the truth – even if it is grim. One thing is certain ,Football in this country will never be the same again. The days of Big Money salaries, Transfers etc. especially in the E.F.L. And if it means the end of greedy agents – so much the better !

  • KevMac says:

Win our remaining game’s.Try to stay in the championship. Then sort out contact’s.Mick Hartford (sort it). Good man! That’s if we finish the remaining of the season!

  • Dave Jones says:

It’s not just out of contract players that could go. If we get an offer of, say, £500,000 for Collins or a comparable amount for Sluga, we won’t be able to turn it down. It’s unfortunate that we hadn’t sorted out a new contract for Pelly too. As per comments above we just need to survive this mess, however we can, and hope and pray that at the end of the day we still have a club to support.

I’ll be interested to see what happens to the majority of Championship clubs that have lived well beyond their means and have huge debts. No doubt they’ll fall on their feet somehow. The 2 or 3 clubs who’ve infringed the 30 million pound rule will no doubt escape with a slap on the wrist and no points deduction.

    • Malcolm Scott says:

Pelly’s contract was extended to the end of 20/21 season as distinguished contract had a 1 year option on it which the club exercised. If he goes there would be a fee.

  • Alan Robinson says:

Kev Mac. I would really like to think that Luton Town will be given the opportunity to “win our remaining games ” but somehow doubt it- once again the E.F.L will see us relegated, just like 2009 I think.
Also, would love to see Big Mick in charge again, but a lot of that is really down to wether he wants the job!. Take Care.

  • Chris winter says:

Hi all, can’t disagree with anyone. The clubs survival is is the no1 priority. We can’t lose it. Where would we go dunstable Barton or to see the scummers Never.

  • barrie plasom says:

why not as all clubs have 9 matches to be played, if season is cut short then the points each team got from there last 9 games should ( my opinion only) be added to the current points total,,, just an idea

  • Ken McAleer says:

I know that things are really tough and we have our backs against the wall but if we let all our good players go what’s the point. Sorry to be pessimistic but I’m getting on a bit now and am struggling contemplating yet another uphill battle to keep the club going. Every 10 years or so we end up in the same place so it’s like ground hog day for me and us older supporters. We always end up in the same place and it’s heartbreaking….

    • Mad Hatter says:

But i’m pretty sure, if it is any consolation, we’re not the only EFL club with our backs to the wall!

  • Chris winter says:

Hi mh, so it seems that Nathan is about to return then. Can’t wait to hear what people say about that.

    • Mad Hatter says:

Good news for one orange faction in the town, horrendous news for those of us that work for the other orange faction, bad day for aviation.

  • David file says:

Get Danny back in the side regularly He is the best chance hatters have of staying up. First name to be pencilled in every week . Must have another contract without fail .

  • Alan says:

Hi all, not against nj coming back, anything better than what we had. Think there will be quite a few happy players at the club this morning…think hylts will be a given a chance now…only time will tell…nj does know the place….

  • Chris winter says:

Hi Alan an mh, so it’s happened Nathan is back. I see on sme platforms fans claiming that because of his work at Stoke he’s now a bad coach. This is totally wrong, I’ve said before on here big clubs in free fall are notorious to manage man utd Chelsea Portsmouth Sunderland come to mind. He has made a bad career move that’s all. Now he will have to show a great deal of contrition to get the fans onside again. If he saves us from religation I doubt it once again he would be the messiah. That’s how fickle fans are. If not he has a rebuilding job to the team.

  • Chris winter says:

Hi mh, I see the Stoke fans have the knives out for Nathan as well lol a club in free fall as I’ve said still think they need another 18mnths to sort their own problems out first
