Premier League Cash Could Filter Down To Luton Town But At What Price?

|

Yesterday, as I continued to mull over the consequences the COVID-19 pandemic might have on Luton Town Football Club, I produced an article that could have been labelled a worst-case scenario.

Although based upon a dream I had, it did make for stark reading – Should Luton Town Supporters Fear The Worst?.

But could there be a more fearful scenario on the horizon?

Yesterday, whilst whiling away the hours, I stumbled across an article that got me thinking.

It is no secret that the EFL has been looking towards the Premier League for financial assistance.

The longer the suspension of the season continues allied with playing behind closed doors when it does resume, drags the possibility / probability of several EFL clubs going out of business.

That, in itself, is a worrying thought.

But whilst engulfed in the aforementioned article, the possibility of what Premier League clubs may want in return for financial assistance was discussed.

Among the ideas that were expressed were two that caused me the most concern.

The first is related to existing clubs being turned, in exchange for cash, into feeder clubs for the big-boys’ of the Premier league. These so-called feeder cubs would see young Premier League players given the opportunity to get regular first-team football. But I fear is that if Luton were to fall into this category, our clubs’ identity and ambition would suffer.

The second is related to the Premier League clubs providing cash in return for shares with a maximum figure of 49% being the limit. Once again, I have to ask what effect this would have on our clubs’ ambition as a whole.

Are we approaching the stage where the above could happen?

Please feel free to air your views on what is an ongoing situation that could, the longer it drags on, have a major impact on the future of Luton Town Football Club.

Hi mh, having read with interest your article. In all honesty I don’t think either of your fears will come to pass. It may be that as now prem clubs will continue to loan youngsters to lower league clubs. But I don’t see prem teams being allowed shares in other teams.

Hi MH, I think if on your first point there was a limit on how many young players being blood for Premier league to say one or two at a push that might not be so bad, especially if it meant the clubs survival. On the second point regarding shares, if it were done in a way where

the club could buy back the shares once in a stronger position then that could be a solution but it would be a bitter pill to swallow if Luton were forced to accept either of the option you have mentioned without any negotiation & am not sure if this would affect how many supporters would still follow the club.

Hi all, i dont think prem teams will want or be allowed shares in lower league teams, also what would happen say for instance leicester bought shares in luton and then they got relegated….more confusion all round..
