Luton – Poor Decisions, Wider Implications

Returning to Tuesday, and the Championship game against Rotherham United, it is time for our last say on the most controversial incident of the game.

In an article yesterday (Wednesday) – were-luton-town-robbed – we wanted your opinion on whether the late, late goal scored by Sonny Bradley, should have stood.

In his after-match interview, covered in our referenced article, Nathan Jones was clearly disappointed that the officials were so quick to rule it out.

The incident provided us, here at Vital Luton, with the perfect opportunity to use our poll facility to gauge your opinion on the incident, simply asking:

Should Bradley’s Late Goal Against Rotherham Have Stood?

The response was incredibly one-sided with 97% voting for the YES option with only 3% voting for the NO option.

Our poll almost drew a comment from a regular visitor to Vital Luton, AlanR who, in a comment he left, scribed:

“The standard of officiating gets worse every season. So much so that I am close to turning my back on the game for that reason. Just go back over the season and count up all the dodgy decisions – both for and against- there have been in our games.”

Which leads us onto an entirely different subject which will be covered, later, in a separate article.

But my biggest gripe is how that one incident could affect the outcome of the season.

Rotherham are fighting for their Championship future, the point they earned, after the poor decision, could impact upon who goes down and who stays up, such is the fine line our officials are treading,

The Premier League has the much-derided VAR, which makes me ponder whether the second-tier of English football should look at adopting something similar.

Your views on the subject matter would be most appreciated.

personally speaking i’m glad we don’t have VAR in the Championship, all that stop start b*llocks, goals ruled out for players being a toe offside, double goal celebrations, subdued goal celebrations as the moment has gone, it’s ruining the game imo. I believe the majority of fans would sooner continue to take the rough with the smooth and have refs make these decisions which on occasions they will get wrong, it’s human nature, but for me it’s an easy decision between switching to VAR or leaving it how it’s always been.
Perhaps the answer is to raise the standard of refereeing, most refs have never played the game, maybe actively promote ex players or players who’ve played the game to a decent standard. They would understand situations better from a players point of view like when tackling it’s inevitable there will be some follow through or when jumping to head the ball your hands have to go in the air for leverage etc

great points Danny, I’ve always wondered why ex-players, especially from the lower league where they are not so wonderfully financially rewarded, do not get involved as referees when they hang their boots up.

Hi all, I totally agree 100% with Danny. I would rather take a decision of a linesman or ref right or wrong as its what gives us old ones our talking points after the game always has been. Rather than put up with the total bollocks from var. These people give honest opinions in a blink and I’m certain they aren’t cheats. But as has been said we could certainly use old pro’s as refs.

  • Peter Scott says:

There are refs that used to be players but they are no better at being a ref. Its a very difficult job – in the Rotheram game you could tell that the ref did not like Adebayo and rejected all his calls for a foul etc . They are only human. There should be an independent person on each side of the pitch in the crowd that can talk to the ref during the game and advise him/her

  • Martyn Smith says:

You have only got to listen to ex players as commentators to realise their judgement on split second decisions would be no better than your ex Bank manager ref. Some even can’t get it right after watching the slow mo repeats 5 times.
