Luton – Capacity Crowds, Don’t Bank On It

Yesterday, as we all know, was labelled ‘Freedom Day’ with the government lifting all the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

It was a day we have all been waiting for, but is everything as it seems, are ALL the restrictions set to be lifted or will other measures be brought in?

The reason I ask the question is that, with instances of COVID-19 cases rising, mutterings emerged last night, on numerous news channels, that the government may decide, from September, to introduce Vaccine Passports for events where attending crowds are close together.

It appears the masses who flocked to nightclubs the very moment they opened may well have triggered this new measure, but I believe it will not stop there, other events could be sucked into this scenario with all sorts of inherent problems emerging.

Last week, I ran an article – it-is-far-from-all-over – which canvassed opinion on whether you would be happy to return to Kenilworth Road when things, pandemic-wise, returned to normal.

Your responses were very honest with several admitting they were not to keen to do so fearing for their own health.

While the double-vaccine is most welcome, cases of people who have been vaccinated catching the virus are now emerging, I cannot help but think society is on a precipice, caught between the lesser of two evils.

Hopefully, my fears will be eased, and society will return to normal, but would you bank on another lock down not being forthcoming between now and Christmas?

I certainly would not!

Luton – A New Deal But Will It Be Plain Sailing

Does a day ever pass without the BBC mentioning Strictly Come Dancing?

Nov 2020 ‘Once the old and vulnerable have been offered the vaccine we’ll go back to normal. Maybe even by spring!’

July 2021 ‘We’re gonna have to vaccinate everyone. Oh, and we ‘expect’ those who have already been jabbed to continue to wear masks in shops’

    ‘Risk’ for those unvaccinated.

    0-19 99.997%
    20-49 99.98%

Would be interesting to know which age demographic is ‘scared’ of returning to a full house at Kenilworth Road. It would either be someone who has been jabbed (who clearly has doubts whether it actually protects them) or an age group who are literally at zero risk.

    Vaccinated (‘protected’)
    Zero risk

Why the need for a vaccine passport?

Clearly I can only speak for myself, however I am in my mid 60’s and am presently concerned rather than worried about returning to a full house at KR.

I am reasonably fit and healthy (touch wood) and have had both vaccinations. I tend to believe from what I have researched that the jabs will offer some but not full protection, however I am mindful that this is a virus which affects people differently, and it is the unpredictability of it which concerns me most.

I have my Season Ticket and will wait until the start of the season to decide if I will attend. Much as I love LTFC, there are more important issues for me to consider. People will make their own choices, and providing they are informed choices then I would say we should respect them.

Two jabs offer much more than ‘some’ protection. 90% or more from serious illness or death is about as high as can ever be achieved by a vaccine. Wear a mask if you’re still worried.

    • Billy B says:

My apologies I was using the word ‘some’ as in less than complete, which is technically correct, however maybe I should have said ‘substantial’ for clarity. You are correct the protection from serious illness or death is up to 90%, although the protection from infection by the Delta variant is between 60% and 80% dependent on which vaccine you have.

I fully support the easing of lockdowns, and support crowds returning to KR, my point is that like everything else in life you determine the potential risk and make your decision accordingly. And as said I would completely respect anyone’s decision on whether they attend or not.

  • Ian Stewart says:

I’m in my early seventies, have had both vaccines, and intend to attend all matches that I can, depending of course on what restrictions are in place.
I believe this is an informed decision and that we must get back to some sort of normality. I, of course, fully respect anyone else who may take a different view.
