A week ago, I published what many might call something of an abstract article which received an interesting response.
The article – luton-a-european-xi – contained a team consisting of players who had worn our famous shirt and who had also been born in Europe.
What I failed to maybe make clear enough was that the XI referred to only mainland Europe with several of the readership nominating players who had Irish connections.
But such suggestions led me down another path and I thought how about compiling an XI of players who have connections with both Luton Town and the Republic of Ireland especially with the town having such a rich Irish heritage.
After much deliberation, I came up with the following XI (plus substitute), see what you think
Goalkeeper – Dean Kiely
Defender – Michael Harriman
Defender – Glen Rea
Defender – Alan Sheehan
Defender – Kevin Foley
Midfield – Ashley Grimes
Midfield – Tony Grealish
Midfield – Kevin Keane
Midfield – Gary Waddock
Striker – Don Givens
Striker – Aaron Connolly
Substitute – Gary Doherty
Can you think of others that fit the criteria and, maybe, should have been included in the starting XI?
If so, simply drop their names in the comment facility beneath this article.

Seamus Dunne, Bud Aherne, Brendan McNally three good fullbacks.
undoubtedly Tony, but a little before my time I’m afraid
George Cummins from another century.
good shout
The 4 before your time. James Collins and Liam George as opposed to the brighton loanee
Good shouts, especially Collins, must have slipped my mind 🙁 getting old lol
I enjoy these articles MH but get a little annoyed that your X1 s only include players after 1967 when it would appear you first went How you could omit Gordon Cummins and Seamus Dunne from a LutonEire team is beyond me Plase do a bit more research into our history in future sir !
I apologise Alan, but I can only judge on what I’ve seen since my first season, sometimes I get it wrong but I can only apologise for that. If only there were video’s of those greats in action. I have a Scotland XI underway and my research shows there are a large number of players, from before my time, who I have no idea of how good they were, but, as always, thanks for your input and, as usual, I’ll take any criticism on the chin.
does anyone call it Eire any more? I remember collecting football magazines when I was young and seeing a picture of the Leeds United midfielder, Johnny Giles, described as playing for Leeds United and Eire.
Liam George
Good shout
