Luton Town – They Played For Both Revisited – Bolton Wanderers

This Sunday, the Hatters commence their FA Cup campaign with a home fixture against the League One side, Bolton Wanderers.

The game will be played on a Sunday, as opposed to a Saturday, with the tie having been selected for international broadcast, make of that what you will.

However, it will make a change to be competing in the competition without having the ‘underdog’ tag attached to us.

Hopefully, we can go on a decent FA Cup run, earn a few bucks and dream of a place at Wembley, it is not to much to ask for is it?

Back in February 2022, in our ‘They Played For Both’ series, I covered Bolton Wanderers – Click Here – and came up with the following starting XI:

Goalkeeper – Juergen Sommer

Defender – Marc Wilson
Defender – Alex Baptiste
Defender – Reece Burke
Defender – John Dreyer

Midfielder – Jacob Butterfield
Midfielder – Matthew Taylor
Midfielder – Steve Thompson

Forward – Bob Hatton
Forward – Steve Elliott
Forward – Barry Fry

And as usual, asked for your nominations as to who else could have been considered who fitted the criteria.

As it turned out, only the one name was put forward:

• Steve Taylor

But since the article was published, another name can also be considered, that of:

• Carlos Mendes Gomes

Also, a bit of further research reeals that the former England defender:

• Colin Todd

may also, at a pinch, be included with Todd having made 2 league appearances for Luton Town whilst also managing Bolton Wanderers during the period 1995-1999.

Therefore, considering all the above, my slightly revised XI is as thus:

Defender – Alex Baptiste
Defender – Reece Burke
Defender – John Dreyer

Midfielder – Carlos Mendes Homes
Midfielder – Matthew Taylor

Substitute – Jacob Butterfield

That is, unless you can provide the names of others that fit the criteria.
