Luton Town Linked With Purchase Of A Defender

Yesterday, I pontificated over the fact there had been very little in the way of transfer rumours, relating to Luton Town so far, this summer.

Thankfully, that situation was rectified yesterday when news broke, courtesy of Football League World which is based on an article in the German publication Bild, that the Hatters were, supposedly, rivalling Preston North End for the purchase of a central defender.

The player in question is currently on the books of Borussia Dortmund and has been identified as Antonios Papadopoulos.

Papadopoulos is a central defender who can also play as a holding midfielder, at 22-years-of-age, he is yet to reach his prime and would seem to be the ideal replacement for the departed Kal Naismith.

But one thing troubles me about this piece of transfer tittle-tattle, the price!

Seemingly, Dortmund wants a fee of £1.3 million for the player which too me puts him out of Luton’s range, I’d imagine that amount, unless money can be raised by selling players, exceeds our whole summer transfer budget, especially with Power Court to be financed.

However, it’s always interesting to read speculation, involving Luton, during the summer transfer window and I thought I’d see just, over the coming weeks who has been linked with a move and see if we can get a complete XI.

Currently, the XI looks as thus:

Goalkeeper – Matt Ingram

Defender
Defender – Antonios Papadopoulos

The money would be better spent on 2 keepers first!!! Or a striker.

Morning MH We currently have Bradley, Burke, Potts, Lockyer and Osho all who can play in central defence. Is someone else leaving we don’t know about? If not surely Chris is right our first priority is goalkeepers and a proven goal scorer. If we only have C1.5Million as our transfer budget just get a an international/ championship proven goalkeeper and sell someone ( not Adebayo) to fund a an additional striker.

Morning 75,so are you prepared to go into next season with isted an a kid as our keepers with shea possibly out till Xmas or later. Or would you prefer to spend it on wages for a keeper an striker. I’m not saying spend 1.3 mill on a keeper or striker. Just what our current situation is in need of.

  • Matt Hills says:

I’d bet a few bob that Nathan Jones has never even heard of this Papadopolous chap……we have higher priorities as the previous comments have eluded to 👍

  • Steve Bahrain says:

No panic on the transfer front, as we tend to do our business later in the window in the space of a week…
..but, for the club very assertively said that no only would we not do a Barnsley next year, we would go one better than this year’s unbelievable performance.
Since saying that we have not confirmed any of the contract extensions from the retained list, lost our EFL player of the season, released a number of well followed youth players we would have thought would be good squad replenishment etc…
Keeper has to be a priority since January transfer window so must be further along down that roads and is crucial…
2020 backed GJ with a big name high value transfer so this story may not be too unrealistic to believe if NJ had asked to back him to reach that next level…
Still early days and trust in our demo strated recruitment strategy remains!

Hello MH I think Chris misunderstood my comment? Did I not say goalkeepers ? Perhaps I should have put a (s) on proven keeper. Yes of course Most Championship clubs have three goalkeepers on their books Really feel Isted would be better to go out on loan to gain more experience with recall if necessary.

Therefore we need two more keepers one of which could be on loan as Shea deserves his place back when fully fit.

Would we be in the premiership now if we could have kept Sluga for one more season??

  • Chris winter says:

Sorry 75 I did misread your comments my apologies, 🙏

  • Alan says:

Why can’t isted be given a chance with an experienced keeper bought in as back up….people on here bleat on constantly about giving our own younger players ago now they want him sent out on loan again…..give him ago…..

    • Peter Scott says:

I totally agree with you – Isted has already played for us several times and was just as good as Sluga in my opinion – play Isted put the young kid on the bench and if Isted gets injured bring in a emergency loan

    • Chris winter says:

Alan I agree with you I want isted as our number but we must have at least 1 if not 2 as back up to avoid last seasons problems.

  • Peter Scott says:

Does not make sense to bring in a young kid who will have homesick issues – bring in loanees like Forest and the other top teams do – we have not even got a player that we could sell now for more than a million . The club has no money to bring anyone of class in otherwise they would have been able to get Kal to stay. KDH is the sort of loanee we should go after who is young and keen – not some hackneyed old pro thats only in it for the money. Cant see much change in personnel in the window unless its loanees

  • Chris winter says:

Morning mh, you can add another keeper to your linked players former loanees matt macey of hibs is now on our radar 😊
