Luton Striker Will Soon Become A Wanted Man

When, back in the summer, James Collins left Luton Town to join Cardiff City, one familiar question surfaced.

With Collins having been our top scorer for several seasons on the bounce, we were all speculating who would fill the void.

Many suggested that Elijah Adebayo had the skills and traits to be the man and that has proven to be exactly the case.

The youngster, signed from Walsall in the January transfer window, is still developing but has already notched an impressive 8 goals this season.

Looking at the Championship top goal scorers list:

1 – Alexander Mitovic (Fulham) – 19 goals
2 – Ben Brereton (Blackburn Rovers) – 12 goals
3 – Dominic Solanke (Bournemouth) – 11 goals
4 – Joel Piroe (Swansea) – 9 goals
4 – Viktor Gyokeres (Coventry City) – 9 goals
6 – Elijah Adebayo (Luton Town) – 8 goals

Adebayo is in decent company and should be proud of what he has achieved so far this season, especially as he has also missed some games through injury.

But with the January transfer window not too far off could Luton face a challenge to keep their man?

Is there a club out there who are willing to take a gamble on the young striker knowing that when he develops further, he could become one of the top strikers in the country?

It is a worrying thought but, thankfully, Nathan Jones seems determined to hang on to his star striker with Luton Today carrying the following remarks, relating to Adebayo, from the gaffer:

“If anyone is interested in Elijah they need to have one hell of a chequebook because he’s scoring goals at a wonderful Championship club and young, goalscoring target men of his size, stature, pace, power, learning capacity, they don’t come cheap.

“So, if someone is going to come in, then they’d better be prepared to be serious as he’s nowhere near his ceiling, so we believe the longer he stays with us, the better he’s going to be.”

Hopefully, those words are the equivalent of a ‘hands-off’ warning and any interested clubs will take heed.

But whilst I do not think there will be any serious bids, this January, for Adebayo, there could come a day, possibly in twelvemonths time, when somebody does make an offer for the 23-year-old striker that the Hatters will have to seriously consider!

Is that how you view the situation, or would you care to differ?

Morning MD , this player is so important to the team at the moment when he is not playing Luton don’t play . I don’t know why NJ sits down with him and try and get Elijah to sign a longer contract. I would like to see Elijah at Luton for two or three seasons as he can become a fantastic player . Coyh

good idea, let’s hope it happens.

I find it really frustrating that we have to discuss this when Elijah hasn’t been at the club that long There’s no doubt he is now a key player for us as I thought he could be when Collins left. However he is still learning his trade and I would have thought Jones should be ‘persuading’ him that Luton is the best place to do it considering we took a chance on him in the first place. I know there is no such thing as loyalty in football but I hope he realises that the best career path is not necessarily getting a huge wage packet as soon as possible.

Agree with adrew. But what is his real worth to someone? Can we afford to let him leave for 3 or 5 or 10 Mill probably with our finance. But like you I feel it won’t be this season.

    • Mad Hatter says:

could we be caught in a trap where Power Court isn’t finished and Adebayor is scoring enough goals to continue to warrant attention, could we stand in his way?

      • Chris winter says:

Our problem is our wage structure. Even with a huge sale price we could not get someone in of quality needed. So would need Fred or gomes to step up. Or look out for another adebayo.

  • Alan says:

Gomes will have too grab his chance if/when it comes, cos Adebayor and cornick will take some shifting at the mo….

  • Adrew says:

Elijah is going to be a top class player let’s hope he is with us for along time but gomes will have to step but let’s not 5hink about that as yet just 2atch the whole team move forward and upwards and maybe we will find the next top young player knowing they will get the chance . Coyh

to get further up the ladder to the premier league,we will have to sell some fantastic players, just like brentford have done.you must generate cash to afford better players. that is why a good developememt squad is so important. we have some great prospects knocking on the first team door, but must be patient.some of these players need a chance to shine, hope they get it. as alan says, adebayor and conick will take some shifting, but who would replace them,if injured.hope for a good game today, don’t underestimate stoke.COYH.
