Luton – It Is Decision Time – Carlos Mendes Gomes

With the EFL Championship currently on hold, due to another absurd international break, filling the void, article wise, is a challenge.

However, one of our regular visitors, Steve Bahrain, gave me an idea for something interesting that should provoke some kind of response.

After running an article (and poll) relating to the three players Luton Town currently have on loan – drameh-horvath-or-nakamba-the-result-is-revealed.

I thought I’d take a look, and ask for a response, regarding those players that were sent out on loan, in the summer, as to whether you believe they could still have a future at Kenilworth Road.

The first player I’ve chosen is Carlos Mendes Gomes.

Carlos, born in Senegal but a Spanish national, was signed in June 2021 for the obligatory ‘undisclosed fee’ during the tenure of Nathan Jones, from Morecambe, but never quite lived up to expectations.

In the summer of 2022, Jones decided that Carlos would benefit from a season out on loan and was duly despatched to the League 1 club, Fleetwood Town.

At the time of writing, Carlos has netted 8 goals in 32 games, a respectable but not great record.

However, with a change in the managerial tenure, at Kenilworth Road, Rob Edwards may not have had time to assess what Carlos may bring to the table, or perhaps Rob has his own ideas as to how he wants to re-shape his squad this coming summer, even more so if we can achieve promotion.

So, looking into your own crystal ball, what do you believe the future holds for Carlos Mendes Gomes?

Frankly mh, I think this is the hardest call of all the loanees he shows in lge1 how good he can be but is he championship material he’s not been given the chance by previous management.so maybe we’ll have to wait on re’s assesment preseason on stay or go. I have no stay or go on him as I don’t know.

I’m going for an opportunity in Frist team next year (unless we get promoted!).
Think he is one of our stand out performers on loan with a good return, albeit in league 1.
Hopefully this time around he hits the ground running and grabs his opportunity as surely will be his last chance.

I do think it’s a bit unfair that he like so many of the other players out on loan have not been given a real chance in a luton shirt but how long can you keep hold of him without the chance per season is more getting up to match fitness. If we don’t go up who will be leaving so maybe he may get the chance . Coyh

Back to my old bug bear.Without an an under 23 league for our youngsters to play in we are struggling to properly develop all the 19,20,21 year olds we keep buying an we have become a mini Chelsea loaning them out to shop window them in the hope if they don’t make the first team they can be sold at a profit. If the council stopped putting blocks on our development of our club we wouldn’t be doing this an have a proper pathway to the first team.

i am not sure who he could replace in the team. is he good enough, not sure. i expect he may be sold on. i would think mc.atee and maybe a few of the youngsters would be in front of c.m.g. if the likes of berry were to leave, maybe a different story. totally agree with chris regarding developement, although we seem to be doing quite well in that department. big congrats to under 21 winning beds senior cup. couple of future stars.?

    • Chris winter says:

As you say Jimbo great job by the boys shame only 750 turned up to watch it.But I reiterate what next for them in development another mcjannet sold to play under 23 football abroad because there is no path for them here ? It’s just so sad.

  • Bill says:

I think he will be moved on along with Pepple, Thorpe and perhaps McAtee. As said we have no real way to develop these players under current system.

  • Alan says:

    It’s a tough one…..just seen his goal against Derby….

  • jimbo says:

it’s a good goal, but would he score that in the championship.certainly is a tough one.COYH.

    • Alan says:

Hi jimbo. Who knows, defenders in the championship would have probably bought him down, especially in a luton shirt & got away with it…..
