Luton – Nearly Near Enough To Feel The Elation

Back in February, in an article, I predicted just how many points Luton Town needed to secure a play-off spot with fourteen games to go.

In the article – promotion-play-offs-predictions-poll-premier-league-and-much-much-more – my view was that Luton Town would need 77 or 78 points to guarantee that cherished play-off spot and a shot at claiming a place in the top-flight of English football.

Now, some six games on, Luton have progressed marvellously and sit in 4th place with 64 points accumulated and have a 7-point gap between themselves and 7th place.

The Hatters have 8 games left in the 2022/2023 season:

• Watford (h)
• Millwall (a)
• Blackpool (h)
• Rotherham United (a)
• Reading (a)
• Middlesbrough (h)
• Blackburn Rovers (a)
• Hull City (h)

Last season, 75 points were needed to secure a play-off place, but with several of those teams vying for one of the four places dropping points, I’m inclined to believe 75 points could well be the revised target this season.

If that is the case, then Luton Town need to accumulate 11 more points to reach their goal.

Looking at the 8 fixtures left, 4 home and 4 away, 11 points should be achievable, it equates to 1.37 points per game which has been reduced from a figure of 2.0 per game, as calculated in my original article.

Surveying our fixtures, I’d expect Luton to get maximum points from the games against Blackpool (h), Reading (a) and Hull City (h) which would leave us, if my calculations are correct, needing just 2 further points from the other 5 games.

Suddenly, the excitement and anticipation levels are going through the roof.

Does anyone else have those same feelings?

Or have my calculations spooked you?
