Luton – And Now For Something Completely Different

A one off, a first, or something that might develop into a regular feature, at the moment who knows?

While doing my research for the following article – they-played-for-both-peterborough – I could not help but notice that, when it comes to goalkeepers, playing for both Luton Town and Peterborough United became a common theme.

In fact, I noticed (although there may be more), there were SEVEN who had been involved with both clubs.

In no particular chronological order, I will run through them.

Starting with Mark Tyler, the popular keeper started his career with Peterborough, playing at London Road between 1994 and 2004 making 413 league appearances, before moving to Luton Town where he was on the books between 2009 and 2016 making 257 league appearances, as Luton slipped into non-league football and climbed back out. In 2016 he returned to Peterborough on loan, making a further 3 league appearances before re-joining the club, permanently and, in a second spell has made 3 more league appearances from 2016 – 2019.

Continuing with Jake Findlay, or to give him his full name, John Williamson Findlay, Jake was on the books of Luton Town between 1978 and 1985 during which time he made 167 league appearances for the Hatters. In 1985 Jake joined Peterborough but failed to register a league appearance.

The third name to spring forth was that of Ian Feuer who was on the books at London in 1996, on loan from West Ham United, during his loan spell with Peterborough he made 16 league appearances. The same season, Feuer also spent a spell on loan, at Kenilworth Road, making 14 league appearances. Feuer joined the Hatters, permanently from West Ham United, in 1995 remaining with Luton until 1998 making 83 league appearances.

Another keeper that had associations with both clubs is Ben Alnwick, who made 4 league appearances for Luton Town, while on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, in 2007. Alnwick was to, later in his career, make 84 league appearances for Peterborough during the period 2014 to 2016.

Continuing, Fred Barber joined Peterborough, on loan from Everton in 1989 and made 6 appearances for the club. Barber joined Peterborough permanently in 1991, staying with the club until 1994 making 63 appearances. In 1994, Barber joined Luton Town but did not make a league appearances and the same season, returned, on loan, to Peterborough where he made a further 5 league appearances.

Tony Godden was another who played for both clubs, during the season 1982 / 1983, Godden joined Luton Town, on loan from West Bromwich Albion, making 12 league appearances. Another loan spell, this time from Birmingham City, in the 1989 / 1990 season, saw Godden make 24 league appearances for Peterborough United.

However, perhaps the strangest tale to tell belongs to Tony Read. In the 1964 / 1965 season, Read made 2 league appearances for Peterborough. The following season he moved to Kenilworth Road and was to go on and make 203 league appearances for Luton. But in the 1965 / 1966 season, Read made numerous appearances, for the Hatters, as a striker and scored 12 goals, including a hat trick against Notts County, some feat.

If you have any memories of any of the goalkeepers mentioned or can think of another who played for both Luton and Peterborough, then please feel free to use the comment facility beneath this article.
