Luton – Holding Out For A Goalscoring Hero

Last season, the Hatters finished in a very respectable 12th position in the EFL Championship.

After escaping relegation to League One, on the very last day of the 2019 / 2020 season, finishing 12th was a commendable achievement.

This coming season we are all hoping that, with the squad revamp, the Hatters can improve further, perhaps clinching a place in the top eight.

But to do so, my view is that they will need to score more goals.

Last season, in 46 Championship games, Luton only managed to score 41 goals, in fact they finished with a negative goal difference, after conceding 52 goals.

Of those 41 goals we did score, just under a quarter, 10, were scored by James Collins, a striker who chose to leave Kenilworth Road and ply his trade with Cardiff City.

Filling the goalscoring boots of the Republic of Ireland will be a huge challenge for someone to rise to.

Could the man to rise to the challenge be Elijah Adebayo?

Signed from Walsall, for an undisclosed fee, on transfer deadline day, Adebayo subsequently made 15 EFL starts for the Hatters, adding another 3 appearances from the bench and scoring on 5 occasions with his goals coming against:

• Millwall (h)
• Sheffield Wednesday (h)
• Coventry City (h)
• Wycombe Wanderers (a)
• Bristol City (a)

Those 5 goals in 18 appearances have given us all hope that the 23-year-old can become the next Luton scoring hero, following in the footsteps of several illustrious former Luton strikers.

But as we all know, to score regularly, Adebayo will need some decent service, something, perhaps, the forwards were starved off, at times, last year.

With Henri Lansbury and Allan Campbell added to the squad, the midfield could be the key when it comes to chances being created and with Carlos Mendes Gomes also looking to get on the scoresheet on a regular basis, last seasons total of 41 could be overhauled.

But it is essential that Adebayo gets off to a good start, even more so with the experienced Cameron Jerome eager to make an impression and stake a claim for a place in the starting XI. If Adebayo does not get the start, we hope he does, it could be a case of hero to zero, such are the fine lines when it comes to team selection.

However, I have every belief that Adebayo will, from what I saw last season, be the man, how about you?

I don’t mind who top scores mh. This season as long as we gat goals that’s all that matters with the forwards we’ve got now if they all got 8 each that’s 40 plus others chipping in I would be disappointed if we can’t score 60 goals. That should be the minimum we are able.

60 sounds a good target to me Chris

Exactly, Chris. However, the poll is a little skewed as I doubt Jerome has been signed as a starter. If he can get 8 off the bench it will be a good return. Adebayo needs to be a menace in the box and leave it to CMG and Cornick and the wing backs to get it to him and not be tempted to drop too far or wide looking for it. That was the problem with Collins during his dry spell last season.

Yes 60 would be good , but we need to test the opposition keeper from outside the box, we struggle to score 60 inside the box

Hi Tom I don’t know if you saw any pre season games but certainly gomes can do it an lansbury. An as you’ve pointed out it’s something that has been missing in our game.

  • Chris winter says:
