Luton – An Unexpected Medical Emergency

On Wednesday, there were worrying scenes when it became apparent that a Coventry City supporter needed urgent medical help.

Thankfully, that supporter, who was identified as Chris Watkins, is, as his post below shows, making a good recovery:

Hopefully nothing similar occurs when we entertain Huddersfield Town today.

But the incident brought back memories for me.

Back in my early teenage years, when I was first allowed to venture to Kenilworth Road on my own, I recall getting into the ground early, with a few mates, to find the TV cameras were covering the game.

In those days, seeing TV cameras at Kenilworth Road was a rarity and I was intrigued to know whether they were from London ITV or Anglia, the reason being our television aerial only picked up the former and not the latter.

Charging up the empty terrace, to peer over the back in the direction of the TV vans, I unwittingly failed to duck beneath a crash barrier and hit it flush with my nose taking the brunt of the impact, prompting me to see stars.

The next thing I recall is waking up in the Luton Town dressing room, flat out on a bench with the St Johns Ambulance staff treating me.

Still a bit dizzy, I could make hear the hustle and bustle of the players getting changed and being given a lecture on tactics.

Still drowsy, I was aware of them leaving the dressing room for the first half and then coming back for the half time break.

As my senses returned, I was, with the second half underway, walked down the Maple Road touchline and back to the Kenilworth Road end, complete with a swollen nose and a note to give to my parents, relating to me having any funny turns once I got home and what action to take.

On getting home the first words from my mum related to my blood-soaked hooded parka asking what I had been up to, once I explained and handed her the note I had been given, I was treated like royalty.

Have any of our readership ever experienced an unexpected medical problem while following Luton, if so give us a brief outline in the comment facility beneath this article.
