Four more names revealed.

After revealing the names of those that have already been selected for the position between the posts and the back-four, it’s now time to reveal who has won a coveted place in the midfield department.

Firstly though, I should apologise for the time lapse between revealing the back four and the midfield, it certainly wasn’t a lack of interest but more the problems linked to working long shifts.

But that’s enough of that, so let’s crack on.

When it came to your Best-ever Luton Town XI’s, it was noticeable that two names, more than others, were prominent selections in the middle of the park, with those two names being Ricky Hill and Bruce Rioch, both of whom have breezed into our Best-Ever XI.

The other candidates for the remaining two positions in an eleven that could quite easily switch from a 4-4-2 formation to a 4-3-3 formation were harder to decipher, but in the end, it was David Preece and Kevin Nicholls who earned the most selections in your teams and, therefore, earned a place in our team.

Therefore, with just the forwards to announce, the make-up of your team is certainly taking shape with it looking as thus, at the moment:

• Ron Baynham
• Tim Breaker
• Paul Futcher
• Steve Foster
• Mal Donaghy
• Kevin Nicholls
• Bruce Rioch
• Ricky Hill
• David Preece

Stay tuned for the final 2 names to be revealed over the weekend.

How Kevin Nicholls can get a spot in the top 11 of all time for Luton just says alot about how bad writers Vital Luton have!

    • Mad Hatter says:

eh! The XI was selected from the plethora of Best Ever XI’s submitted by the Vital Luton membership, on a basis of whoever was selected the most got a place in the team, they do not represent the beliefs of the Vital Luton editor!

The original question was your favourite players of while you have watched the hatters. So while Kevin was not as talented as some he put his body on the line every game an would have died for us and that spirit endeared him to us. An you need steel in a team he gave us that. Also if he couldn’t play an we were away. He would join us on the terrace not sit in comfort in the stands. To us that was gold

  • Dave Jones says:

But the text above the team says David Preece, not Kevin Nicholls!!

  • Dave Jones says:

Really!! Kevin Nicholls instead of Dave Moss. Oh well.

Opinions seemed to vary immensely when it came to teams submitted that formed the basis of the best-ever. Just watched a video of the 1973 / 74 promotion season, hardly anyone from that superb era got a mention – John Aston, Jimmy Ryan, Alan West, Jimmy Husband, Bobby Thompson, John Faulkner, Alan Garner to name but a few! Nowt as strange as folk as they say up norf!

Good point. My recollection is that we were a well balanced, organised team that season. The team was possibly greater than the sum of it’s parts, a bit like the current Leicester maybe, well coached with a good system.

Wasn’t Jimmy Husband a bit later? I remember him from 1977, a season when we scored a lot of goals.
