As we continue our look at the contents of the ‘retained’ list, as issued by Luton Town earlier this month, we have a question for you.
The list – Retained/Released List – made reference to the five players that ended the season on loan at other EFL clubs:
• Matt Macey
• Glen Rea
• Dion Pereira
• Carlos Mendes Gomes
and
• John McAtee
But and we are getting to the crux of this article, do any of them have a future at Kenilworth Road?
With the club having climbed into the top tier of English football, the Premier League, the bar at which the team must operate has been raised.
Indeed, I can’t help but ask if the situation may have been different if we were still an EFL Championship side next season, would their futures be a lot clearer.
My view, sadly, is that perhaps McAtee will be retained and sent out on loan but as for the other four, Macey, Rea, Pereira and Gomes, I reckon the quartet will all be sold with whatever funds are incoming being added to the transfer pot needed to bolster the squad.

But, planning on a possible relegation, would Pereira and CMG be useful to another Championship season the year after with another full season loan under their belt?

I would be inclined to keep CMG and loan out McAtee to League 1. The rest, including Muskwe, we should allow to leave.

I’ve only ever seen rea play on a regular basis so it’s difficult to say about the others, I like Rea but how is he now after that long term injury, if he is fully fit and performing well on loan I’d give him another season. I think I’d have kept Isted, he was never given much of a chance but when he got on always performed well.
None of the players who went out on loan to lgs 1&2 made a great impact as far as I can tell (except Harry Isted at Barnsley) so are they really going to be what we need in Premiership? Whatever happened to Arbim Pepple, by the way?
