Sat in the pub last night, as you do when a European Final is being shown live on the TV, the chat, after a few too many beers, veered down a comical route.
Let’s just say that it descended headlong into a debate as to what was considered the surprise of the night.
Half our party were convinced the biggest surprise was West Ham United winning the equivalent of Europe’s Anglo Italian trophy and believing they were the Champions of Europe, while the other half were surprised that Lionel Messi had opted to join Inter Miami instead of approaching the Hatters hierarchy with the offer of a season or two at Kenilworth Road.
As the night got messier and messier (see what I did there?) we got into the scenario of what Lionel could have been offered to join Luton Town for our historic first season in the Premier League. Naturally, the deeper the suggestions got the more ridiculous they became.
Suffice to say, on reflection, it’s better to not include them in this piece, I can’t afford any libel / slander fees.
But seriously does he really want to play SOCCER in the good old US of A?
But fair play to the Hammers, before the kick off I wasn’t too fussed who won the final, but after Fiorentina decided, at the merest touch, they’d go down, I opted to cheer for the claret and blues, except they didn’t wear that kit, instead it was a shade of white with what looked like blood stains on the bottom quarter.
As for the winner, they’ve got me to thank for that, as I muttered loudly that I couldn’t sit through extra time and yet more pints of the amber stuff. All that remains now is for a hastily written homage to the win to be inserted into EastEnders tonight!
Naturally, I’ve a bit of a hangover this morning, but aren’t good nights out with the lads worth it, even more so when it seems an eternity until the football season restarts?
August has never seemed to be so far away!
