Luton Town – A Decent January Transfer Window For The Hatters

The recent January transfer window will go down in the history books as one of the quietest on record.

For once there were no expensive deals concluded by the so-called big-six with everyone, seemingly, minding their cash for fear of transgressing the financial restraints clubs are forced to operate under.

As far as the Hatters go, there were a few low key arrivals – Tom Holmes, Henry Blackledge, Oliver Camis, Taylan Harris and, of course, Daiki Hashioka with only the latter likely to challenge for a first-team place this season, with the others being nurtured for the future.

But, although there was no big expenditure, in either the buying or selling aspects of the market, you have to say that, as far as Luton Town are concerned, it was a decent January transfer window.

Ahead of the window, and right up to the last minute, I had this nagging fear that the Hatters might lose a couple of players, with clubs offering transfer fees we just could not refuse, with the likes of Ross Barkley, Thomas Kaminski and Teden Mengi being three that instantly spring to mind.

Although earning promotion to the top-flight last May, provided the club with a very welcome treasure chest, it shouldn’t be forgotten that we are a frugal club and, when it comes to bringing money in, common sense is the name of the game, sometimes offers are too good to turn down.

For Rob Edwards, it is a chance to continue to develop those who have given us hope that this season will not be a fleeting glimpse of Premier League football but one in which we can retain our current status and prepare for another season in one of the most revered leagues in the world.

For me I never expected any of the big five to leave. I was more surprised that very few offers came in for fringe players an I’m told they were to poor to entertain.

Agree about the fringe/squad players. There is real quality there. Berry? If I were a top 6 Champ side manager I’d be offering 1-2M for him. Absolute class. Potts, Mpanzu, again top quality. From my point of view delighted the top Championship managers aren’t looking our way! We have a superb squad. All this and without our Captain Tommy while he has a deserved rest and think about his future.
