Luton – Time To Stick Or Time To Twist – Barnsley (A)

Three games into the new season, two in the Championship and one in the Carabao Cup, I have a question to ask?

With our record, in all competitions, reading WLL, albeit the first loss coming on penalties to Stevenage in the Carabao Cup after numerous changes to the starting XI, does Nathan Jones have a difficult decision to make?

Against Peterborough United, in the first game of the season, the Hatters produced an emphatic performance that suggested 2021/2022 would be a good season.

But now I am not so sure!

Against Stevenage we looked lacklustre and as our performance in the penalty shoot-out, well the less said the better.

Last time out, against West Bromwich Albion, only a spirited fight back, when we were 3-0 down, stopped us from being mauled.

On Tuesday night, we travel to South Yorkshire to take on a Barnsley side that almost gate-crashed the promotion scene last season, it promises to be a difficult fixture.

Last season, the Hatters won at Oakwell, beating the Tykes 1-0 with a goal scored by James Collins, in the reciprocating fixture at Kenilworth Road we lost 2-1 with Collins, again, netting the Luton goal.

Based on our failure to grab anything from the last two games and getting to the crux of this article, if you were Nathan would you stick with the same team or would you make changes for the trip to Barnsley?

Now I accept circumstances are depriving us of certain players but, with a large squad, what would you change, if anything?

Morning mh, unless lockyer is fit enough to start I don’t see how we can change the back four an even that entails risk as his lack of really game time means he’s rusty. I would like to see osho in front of a back three in time. As to every thing else I would like to see lansbury start. I didn’t go sat as you know I was at Lords. Why did he replace Fred? Was he bad or tactical?

  • Alan says:

Hi Chris, went sat, Fred wasn’t really getting any joy. This changes made improved us completely…..I’ve concern over slug again at the mo, he doesn’t look confident at all…..as I’ve said earlier, think he should called for the throw into his 6yard box that lead to Naismith og…the 2nd he just wasn’t committed enough for me….if he thinks he was fouled then do what other keepers do and go down like a sack of shite….just my views tho….

Hi Alan, thought maybe all the changes at the back have been to much for sluga’s confidence. Remember he came back late from the euros. Didn’t get much of a preseason with the new guys an just like when he signed he’s gone straight back in the team.

Lansnury should start and muskew there not much Nathan can do at the back at present I think we could get a result on Tuesday if we don’t then things will need to be looked at we have to be more aggressive and not get rolled over so easy the problem is we conceded early goals and Sluga looks very out of sorts

  • Alan says:

True just wish he would be more commanding in and around his 6 yard box. Doesn’t matter who is in front of him, just boss it…..give him some uncle Les videos to watch…lol….

  • Andrew says:

Hi all , would it be better if NJ drop slugs for this game and bring him back after a few weeks look how well he played last time he was dropped and came back did really well just few weeks to rest up more .

    • Colin Logan says:

100 percent agrees what about Jerome playing on Tuesday and Gomez just think that could work Jerome was outstanding when he came on he knows how to play as a centre forward been there and done it

      • Mad Hatter says:

Seeing as Gomes was, supposedly, the most costliest buy this summer, he has not had much chance to show what he can do!

  • Paul says:

As I said in a previous post, goalkeepers need to be aggressive and cocky, I frequently see in it in other goalkeepers in this division, but not from Sluga, you can’t coach that, and I dont think he has it in him to change.
Why don’t the goalkeeper caoches see that? is it because of the 1.5 mil price tag, that we will never get back.
He’s out of his depth at this level.

  • Jez says:

Just as long as us being more aggressive in midfield does not mean playing Rea, his distribution is awful and I just don’t think he has sufficient quality to be a championship player. Would be interesting to see Jerome and Adebayo starting together, albeit probably not this game, wait until we have the CB’s back to play a back 3.
