Luton – Somewhere Down The Line Possibily Or Probably

Yesterday, in the first of two articles relating to a posting from a visitor to Vital Luton Town, we opted to discuss transfer fee transparency.

Our article – that-age-old-question-raises-it-head-again – attracted, rightly so, some attention.

Today, in the second article relating to the comment posted by Sad Platter, we’re focussing on the Power Court development.

Recently, Gary Sweet, in an update, we covered in the following article – the-big-power-court-development-question – our board emphasised that it was their intention to see the project through to completion.

But Sad Platter, in his posting, wasn’t so sure, penning the following:

“I honestly wish PC was going to happen, but all the signs are not good. Gary Sweet has so far blamed Brexit, Covid, changes to people’s shopping habits and needing changes to the original plans. What were these exactly?

“The latest announcement was almost a surrender, switching the tone to one of hope rather than intent. Not encouraging to many.

“Could it be the plan was to attract a buyer all along?

“It would look a decent proposal on paper, lack of debt, championship club, decent training facilities and land to build a stadium on prime ground? What could be an issue… can I suggest the asking price?

“Are 2020 again learning lessons… this time about stadiums or selling a football club to rich investors?

“I hope not!”

A controversial view but one that could be argued may be a way forward. English football is now becoming a playground for foreign investment, whereas, previously, foreign owned clubs could be counted on the fingers of one hand, these days the majority of takeovers are by foreign consortiums.

Sad Platter makes some good points and with inflation still rife, the cost of building Power Court is, I’d imagine, escalating by the day.

Now, in no way is this article intended to criticise the fine work the board are doing and have done so in the past, but would a takeover, by the right consortium, be the perfect answer or would it just open up another can of worms?

Sat in the editorial chair, I’d be interested in reading your views, on the above subject matter, in the comment facility beneath this article.

Personally after all the heartbreak of past years an crooked owners. In no way do I want the current owners to sell out. I trust them and even if power court goes down the pan. I don’t think it’s all their fault. An I truly believe that they are fans first and foremost.

Just to point out that all of these things have happened and made the economy worse in all instances bar the last which did need a replan – Brexit, Covid, changes to people’s shopping habits and needing changes to the original plans. Add a war and 12 years of Tory bollocks running the country into the ground and prices sky rocketing and it’s no wonder it’s costing more and taking longer.

    It will happen though

It’s been going to happen since I first went to Kenilworth Road with my father circa 1955😊 fortunately I have infinite patience that all LT fans need. Hopefully it will happen in time for me to see a game there. At 76 it needs be fairly soon.

Agree with Chris, the global climate has worked against us. Sweet has admitted that Brentford just got their stadium built in time and i note that both new owners of Coventry and Gillingham have said this week that the current climate is not the time to consider a new ground!
Our board are fans and I trust their judgement. Wouldn’t turn down further investment though but this board must keep influence and control which probably puts off those with big egos and fat wallets.

Hi all, I hope the board can come through and get the stadium built what I don’t want is a board like down the road and keep changing mangers. But sometimes we have to bite the bullet see who is out there and willing to put their hands in deep pockets for the new stadium. Coyh
