Luton – Reputations Tarnished By Pure Greed

Well, that was all a bit of a damp squib was it not it last night, or to put it better fan-power basically won!

Tuning into what is now, courtesy of the pandemic, a daily dose of football, starting with Norwich v Watford and then Chelsea v Brighton, the entertainment away from the pitch was far more interesting than the action on it.

Just 48 hours after the bold announcement of the European Super League, it dramatically collapsed.

Following the announcement, on Sunday night, of its formation, managers, players’ and supporters alike were vociferously against it, momentum was certainly building as we headed toward early evening.

The sight of thousands of Chelsea supporters protesting outside Stamford Bridge, ahead of their Premier League fixture with Brighton, summed up the mood perfectly with the kick-of, in the end, being delayed 15 minutes as the two sides could not get into the ground.

Then the announcements slowly filtered through, one-by-one, the so-called big-6 released a press statement stating they were withdrawing from the new entity.

Its formation had collapsed as quickly as a house of cards.

But one thing still troubles me, the arrogance of those who own these clubs.

Okay, I can probably accept that the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Spurs felt they had no option once the others had signed up to the deal, but the lack of communication with the managers, players’ and support I find astounding.

To me it confirmed just how poorly the supporters, in the upper echelons of our game, are treated, it is disgusting.

But perhaps the most damning aspect of the whole episode is how the owners of these clubs had buried their heads in the sand in an exercise that was all money-based, crass is a word that springs to mind.

Okay, social media messages, etc, are now emerging from those who have had committed this cardinal sin, but I cannot help thinking the reputation of their clubs has been tarnished not in just the minds of their fans but in the eyes of football in this club.

But I wonder, if those thousands of Chelsea fans had not of descended upon West London, would the house of cards have collapsed so fast, or would they have tried to bulldoze the plan through?

Please feel free to have your say on the events of last night in the comment facility beneath this article.

Morning mh, earlier I posted some thoughts on the original post. Did fans power lead to the demise or not maybe a little. My earlier post gives my reasoning. What I will add is don’t try banning these clubs from Europe next season giving them the excuse to start their own competition among themselves. This will play into their hands

I’m waiting for the government to claim their threats saved the day 🙂

Interesting points you raised about fines an deductions an the other clubs. So how do we punish them? If the owners are that untouchable? Can you see the problem. Would you apply the fit an proper person protocol an ban them from owning the clubs. Can’t see that can you. Who could afford it. An probably they would find a way sell to another part of their empires an retain control. Maybe a salary cap on them. Or maybe a transfer ban. Exclude them from prem decisions for a year. Allowing the other clubs all decision making for a year

I’d go for excluding them from decision making, when decisions are made you need 14 to vote for them which suits the 14 clubs that were not part of the European Super League plan.

Greed ? To some extent. Pure greed ? Wrong

Fear was overwhelmingly the main driver.

Hi all what a farce total embarrassing waste of time….my god we have had some shady owners in the past, but the do called super 6 take the biscuit….fair play to the fans, all in it together….dock them all 10/12 points next season and all the USA owners should go back to their version of rounders and micky mouse version of rugby and leave proper football alone…bunch of money grabbing muppets…

  • Alan says:

    So were the muppets……

Brings back memories of our own board having the smart idea that a move to Milton Keynes would be a wise one!
