Luton – Leicester, Chelsea Or Not Bothered

As a youngster, and when live coverage of football was extremely limited, FA Cup Final day was one of the highlights of the year.

The saturation coverage provided by the BBC and ITV had me glued to the set from early morning until well after the FA Cup had been presented to the winning team.

I can still recall such items as:

• FA Cup It’s a Knockout
• Meet The Team
• FA Cup Question of Sport
• On the Coach With The Teams

Born after 1959, I never got the chance to see the Hatters at Wembley in the FA Cup Final, the nearest I came being the sad semi-final defeat at the hands of Everton, a game I still believe we should have won and a few years later seeing Chelsea defeat us at Wembley.

But, as a schoolboy I had this trait whereby whoever knocked Luton Town FC out of the FA Cup, got my support for the remainder of the competition.

More times than not, it was a plan that fell flat on its face as our conquerors were consequently knocked out in a subsequent round.

But this season things are different.

Our conquerors, Chelsea, have made it to the final and, this Saturday, will be taking on Leicester City, in a Wembley show piece being played in front of a smattering of spectators.

However, do I still want Chelsea to win or has old age changed that aforementioned trait?

I really am torn between the two clubs, should I stick with how I calculated things many moons ago or do I go with Leicester City who I perceive to be the under-dogs?

Perhaps if James Justin had not of picked up a season ending injury earlier in the campaign, the decision would have been easier.

But then again, there have been a plethora of players who have played for both Luton and Chelsea, some fine examples being Mick Harford, Mal Donaghy, Mark Stein and Kerry Dixon to name but four.

Clearly, I have yet to make my mind up, but come Saturday, who would you like to see lift the famous trophy?
