Luton Legend Faces Cancer Battle

I have just returned home after a shopping trip to be greeted with some news that has left me reeling.

It has now become public knowledge, courtesy of Sky Sports and numerous other news sources that the legend that is Mick Harford is battling prostate cancer.

As a result of his forthcoming radiotherapy treatment, Harford will be away from Kenilworth Road, thereby depriving the club of a valuable asset.

But that is the least of our worries, our main concern, here at Vital Luton Town, is hoping that Mick makes a full recovery from this awful disease.

Now as someone who is similar in age to Mick, I am perfectly aware of all the ailments that could come our way, I have only recently undergone the slightly humiliating procedure relating to sending off a sample, for analysis, for the Bowel Cancer Screening programme.

I could spend paragraphs preaching the virtues of making sure any of our readers who fall into the age category, undergo the tests but I feel Mick has put it perfectly in addressing the media by remarking:

“What I want is to raise awareness and encourage other men to go and get themselves checked out.

“That’s what I did and it’s not something that we are good at, us middle-aged and older men.

“We don’t like to talk about illness or go to the doctor, because we think we might be wasting their time, especially in the current climate with Covid. It is so vital not to think like that.

“The early symptoms of prostate cancer aren’t always noticeable, which is why it is so important to go to your GP and get checked out.

“I know a few people at the football club who have gone and done so since I was first diagnosed, and if our wonderful supporters can do one thing for me, it is to do exactly that, because early diagnosis is so crucial.”

I am sure you will join me in wishing Mick all the best as he prepares for his treatment, good luck mate and I hope to see you back on the touchline, at Kenilworth Road, soon.

Hi mh, I know you are busy and only just seen the news. I PUT up a post this morning. I don’t know what you’re posters think but I suggested we start a giving page for prostate cancer research on micks behalf. What do you think?

  • Chris winter says:

Ruddock has agreed a new contract at luton he felt it was his best option after looking around. But you have to wonder now if he can get into this team or be a squad player. Or will we sell on in December and get a few quid for him?

  • Alan says:

Hi m8, I feel he will become a valuable squad player coming off the bench….also a good personality to have around the new young players coming in……for me a bit of good news, amidst the bad news on mick earlier….

Sad news about big Mick hope he can get though this and make a full recovery , be on the bench very soon. Glad to see pelly has signed on the line . He was there at the begining and I just hope he can still be there with the new stadium and hopefully in the premiership which will be the ideal story . Morrell can move on for sure now .

  • Alan says:

Bang on chris….glad pelly is staying… also keep the moaners on their toes…..can’t wait for this season to start….get in the play offs for mick….
