Luton – It Is Decision Time – Matt Macey

For the fifth in our short series, the focus falls on another of the Hatters squad who is currently out on loan.

After already taking a look at the future careers of Carlos Mendes Gomes, Harry Isted, Admiral Muskwe and Dion Pereira, it is now time for you to voice your thoughts on the future of Matt Macey.

Macey arrived at Kenilworth Road, for an undisclosed fee, on 20-June-2023, from the Scottish side, Hibernian.

Seemingly from good stock, having come through the youth system at the Premier League club, Arsenal, many expected Matt to claim the first team keepers shirt, especially with James Shea out injured on a long term basis.

But the Hatters hadn’t finished recruiting when it came to the green jersey with the USA international, Ethan Horvath, joining the club on a season long loan deal from Nottingham Forest.

Indeed, it was Horvath who claimed the keepers jersey in EFL Championship games with Macey only being chosen for the EFL Cup.

Therefore, with Harry Isted also on the books it may not have come as too much of a surprise when it was announced, in the January transfer window, Macey was being allowed to go out on a loan, for the remainder of the season, to Portsmouth.

Since joining Portsmouth, rumours are gathering pace, as reported by Luton Today that the south coast side are looking to sign Macey on a permanent deal.

With Luton having also now signed Jack Walton, from Barnsley, Macey’s future looks to lie elsewhere, in my opinion.

But is that an opinion you share?

Didn’t inspire me in the EFL Cup game, however recruitment team see something in him that many don’t. He has spoken of his desire to play for Luton next year recently but wants first team football. Can’t see him usurping any of the other keepers we have on the books at the minute so think a frustrated loan spell on the cards again next season.

Should never have wasted the transfer fee on him.wasnt good enough first time round.not good enough now.hes at his level now an although he’s started ok at Pompey he will revert to type you mark my words. When he’s needed most he’ll crumble.sell him an get our money back.
Also having seen who’s been appointed as ref for the scum game.im not getting my hopes up on that either!!!!

Hi Chris, as you stated before, it’s up to us to score goals & not rely on dodgy referees decisions…….
