Luton – It Is Decision Time – John McAtee

For the fifth in our short series, the focus falls on another of the Hatters squad who is currently out on loan.

After already taking a look at the future careers of Carlos Mendes Gomes, Harry Isted, Admiral Muskwe, Dion Pereira and Matt Macey

it is now time for you to voice your thoughts on the future of John McAtee.

When it comes to young forwards, it’s fair to say the Hatters have been on a recruitment drive since the 2021/2022 season ended.

As well as signing (for an undisclosed fee) John McAtee, we’ve also seen Joe Taylor and Aribim Pepple join the club.

McAtee, the older brother of the Manchester City starlet, James McAtee, joined the Hatters, from Grimsby Town, on 02-August-2023 but was immediately loaned back to the Mariners without pulling on a shirt in anger.

The 23-year-old briefly returned to Luton after an injury and, on his road to recovery, played for the Development squad.

However, his Luton career has yet to really take off and this season, while at Grimsby, he has not been used as regularly as Luton might have hoped, making just, at the time of writing 17 league appearances and scoring on 4 occasions.

Which brings me round nicely to the usual poll in this series:

Luton – It’s Decision Time – John McAtee

A Luton Career Next Season!

Another loan spell next season!

A Move Away In The Summer!

A Move Away In The Summer!

My view is that McAtee could, despite Rob Edwards having not had chance to work with him, be surplus to requirements and at 23-years-of-age he may well have missed the boat.

But is that an opinion you share?

I don’t think it’s fair to judge him just yet.signed while injured. An let’s at least give him a chance to show his worth.that said he could be as Steve said yesterday just another 19 to 23 that will be wasted money an disappear down that black hole.

    • Mad Hatter says:

will he get a chance though with Pepple and Taylor also on the books?

      • Steve Bahrain says:

Very hard to judge as unknown quantity… Assuming only, that Taylor being signed by RE is ahead of him and Pepple based on age and current return on loan is behind him.
Will maybe be given a couple of runs before heading on loan? Very hard to gauge

Who knows mh. Rob has yet to put a team out in his own image.hes kept it simple no big change in system with success. Will he want to change our playing style does he have an input on who we buy.does he want an under 23 side put in a league now .not in the future? So many imponderables will he give everyone a chance pre season next year.who does he feel are expendable currently.

from what i have seen of mc.atee, he is more of an attacking midfielder. he wins the ball well and passes well. think he needs the edwards magic . i think he could do well. COYH.

I think he will be moved on. Not up to Championship football ( or league 2 apparently).
RE is going to play Morris and Adebayo no matter what so no real point in having a lot of fringe players. Harry Cornick saw that and went and I think Cauley might go too.

  • Alan says:

RE will build his team next season, whether promotion is achieved or not. He said when he came in he would change much. But I think you will a difference next term….

  • Rob aslett says:

Maybe a better player with better players and a bit more space.

  • Byron says:

I’m a Grimsby town supporter you have a great player in Ncatee , far better than league two, we will miss him,he will be a great asset to your squad

  • GTFC Fan says:

McAtee was outstanding in the National League and was instrumental in the successful play off run, scoring brilliant goals and creating chances for his team mates. However he has been much less effective in League 2. Fans claim this was due to the quality of the squad, his ability or his attitude on and off the pitch. IMHO he will struggle to break into the team and will probably go out on loan to a lower league, I hope. I hope he makes it, his efforts in 21/22 will always be remembered and appreciated by GTFC fans.
