Luton Fans React To Unexpected Derby Defeat

Ahead of the trip to Pride Park, optimism levels were high when it came to the outcome of the game with 75% of those who voted in our poll inferring Luton would win.

Unfortunately, it was not to be the case with the Hatters slipping to a 2-0 defeat, with the goals coming early in each half.

But, once again, it was the manner of the defeat wit Luton showing just how inconsistent they can be.

The performance the side gave, in my opinion, blew away any of the confidence we had of a top-10 finish that was discussed in a recent article – you-believe-it-is-on-the-cards.

In fact, based on the showing at Pride Park, I am grateful that there is a decent points gap, still, between ourselves and the relegation places.

Delving into the comments left on social media, it appears I am not the only one disappointed with the performance, as the following posts illustrate perfectly:

But what did the boss, Nathan Jones, make of it all?

Talking to the local media and as reported by The BBC, Nathan had this to say:

“We are not a team to chase from 2-0 and we don’t usually have to do that, but we started both halves really poorly.โ€

Indeed, we are not, all our wins away from home, seven if I can count correctly, have been by a 1-0 score-line, goalscoring remains, as it has all season, a problem.

Continuing, the gaffer added:

“Derby started fast, but we allowed them to come on to us a little bit and we conceded. If we’d seen that period out then, for half an hour of the first half we were excellent, I thought, and created enough chances to have got on the scoresheet.”

But being a goal down was always going to be a handicap.

As for the second and deciding goal, Nathan further added:

“We want to start the second half well and go after the first goal and it was the polar opposite.

“From our corner they break, we had numbers back there, don’t defend it well enough and suddenly it’s 2-0 and pretty much game over.”

It was but the biggest question I have is why do we concede so many early goals?

Perhaps we can perform better, against Barnsley at Kenilworth Road, on Easter Monday.

Morning mh, yet again Glen rea has had another poor game this season along with Pearson an Bradley their form has dipped badly. Hence silly goals being conceded. We look better when lockyer an naismith play in defence. So who knows what the solution is.

Hi all, like I said after Paul’s post one defeat and everyone is shite…..also if you have a mass clear out, there has to be replacements…..people slagging Pearson, but let’s remember NJ hasn’t much choice a centre back at the moment due to injuries….personally I think sluga should have come for the cross on the 1st goal and a few minutes later he was routed to his line on a similar cross. I played centre halve at a decent level and every keeper I played with dominated the 6 yard box…His dive for the pen was a bit rare too… still everyone else’s fault aye….still win 2more and everyone will calm down again for a while….coyh…

Hi Alan, your right about the the players you mentioned.. But as for a mass clear out well with 5players out of contract an if they chose to leave. Plus any nj finds surplus to requirements. Then we have 3 players that next season will be added to the first squad nj has already earmarked them osho kioso an perraria. At least 1 may make a first team appearance before the end of the season. Then we don’t have to add to many in the summer.

I know that chris mate, I was referring to all the panic merchants that always react the same way after a defeat…..

afternoon all, if Bradley leaves which i suspect he may then i can’t see Pearson also leaving. Finding two available CH’s with their Championship experience and within our budget would be tricky.
Finding some consistency in our play has and will continue to be an issue whilst we aim to consolidate our place in the Championship. We’ve proven on our day we can compete with teams with much more resources but doing that week in week out is a very big ask and unrealistic to expect it in my opinion.

Win a few, lose a few whilst finishing top half will do very nicely for me and importantly it’s looking like we will have improved on last seasons total which is progress.
