Luton – A European Super League

|

Well, well, well, the announcement that broke yesterday evening, relating to a European Super League, has certainly put the cat among the pigeons!

The announcement has not been accepted with glee by a huge swathe of football supporters, but when did our opinion ever really count when it comes to the so-called elite clubs foraging their own paths?

The game, in the past few decades, has moved away from belonging to the working man it is now a financial driven entity.

Personally, the announcement did not come as too much of a surprise to me, the formation of a European Super League has been something that has been discussed for numerous years, sort of bubbling under the surface ready to break through.

Naturally, arguments are entering the arena relating to the financial aspect, the closed shop aspect, and the destruction of football as we know it.

But can you really blame any of the Premier League clubs Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal or Spurs, from signing up?

After all, was the formation of the Premier League, back in the 1990’s, to far removed from what is happening now?

Already those who govern our sport presently, have intimated the so-called big-six will not be allowed to play in the Premier League and that participating players will be barred from international football.

But will that put them off?

I doubt it, money rules now and, after all, how many times do players withdraw from international football through minor injuries or even retire to prolong a club career.

If the European Super League does get off the ground, I wonder what will happen to the remainder of domestic football.

Will it flourish or as I fear, will it become second rate, brushed aside by the huge amount of cash the European Super League will generate?

Playing football during this pandemic, to me, sowed the seeds of this latest plan, clubs have realised that TV money dominates and cash through the turnstiles is almost now a secondary revenue stream.

But what are your views on the so-called European Super League?

Morning mh, this is an interesting question. Personally as an ex arsenal season ticket holder. I stopped donkeys years ago. As I couldn’t afford to pay their prices an hold my luton season ticket as well. Especially after the loss of standing on the terraces. All the clubs who are joining I would say have more foreign supporters (E.G. Non local fans than actual from place they play) so if they left the prem league they probably would still not suffer financially from loss of income. Especially if the numbers I’ve seen quoted are true. So is it possible that locals might go an watch another team close by obviously not Everton but tranmere maybe? For example or Fulham qpr. Boosting our own league. Maybe it’s a possibility. Will it mean the prem teams losing income if these teams go maybe not if their fans go to support other teams. Will players sign for them if the penalty is harsh. If the money on offer is that good yes. Would I miss them no. Will it actually happen I think not.

I think we have only been fed a few threads of what is going on behind the scenes, I am sure more will emerge over the coming days, interesting, but worrying times, for football I’d say!

In my opinion this is a ploy by the biggest clubs to get a bigger say in domestic affairs an a bigger slice of the cake. Its cynical exploitation by the big corporate institutions who own them with little respect or regard for real fans. I was never a fan of neville as a player. But he was spot on with the comments yesterday and big respect for saying what he did saying it as it was no matter how much he offended the clubs involved. I hope his advice is followed an all clubs involved hit with millions in fines an massive points deductions immediately. Never gonna happen is it their not luton town.

it does need a quick response from those who currently run the game, otherwise the REBELS will plough on regardless. Neville was speaking from the heart yesterday, sticking up for all football fans, even if it meant upsetting his beloved Manchester United. It is just a shame all this has come out whilst games are being played behind-closed-doors, imagine the furor at the homes of the big-6 this weekend if stadia were full to capacity. Social media is alive with voices of discontent from those that support the big-6.

          • Chris winter says:

Exactly why corporate business is doing it no fans to cause them any worries. But I suspect that the backlash will grow an grow.

          • Mad Hatter says:

I hope so, the future of the game, as we know it, is at stake.

    • Alan says:

Hi all, best thing that could happen is, it goes ahead and falls flat on its arse…..I no its unlikely, but would be hilarious….personally I wouldn’t miss any of the over paid prima donna’s….as chris said most of the so called big 6 ( how many are actually in the top 6 at present) supporters don’t live locally to their chosen clubs, so smaller clubs could benefit greatly….

      • Mad Hatter says:

Mourinho sacked! Or are the rumours correct that he walked after refusing to take training due to Spurs committing to European Super League?

  • Paul says:

A Super league full of Harlem Globe Trotters, who want to still play in the premier league with billion pound budgets.
The top of the premier will be the same six teams every season, may as well have a Super premier league with just the top six, that amounts to the same thing.

  • Alan says:

I think if they want to break away, then they must leave the Premier league therefore they won’t be in Cup competitions. A break away should mean break away…..

  • Danny says:

afternoon all, i’ve never been a fan of Gary Neville but i thought everything he said yesterday was spot on. Whether he would have been quite so passionate & vocal if he wasn’t financially attached to Salford City FC is another matter but credit where it’s due he nailed it about this super League all being greed from non-English owners who couldn’t give a toss about anyone else or the history of English League football.

  • Chris winter says:

Morning mh, So the super league is dead an buried. Or is it. As I said in previous posts now watch these clubs demanding to get an even bigger say an more money for their loyalty to staying with us. As I said previously it was corporate greed for this to happen. Well now whilst it will never happen they should still be fined massively an have points deducted for what they did. What do you say.

    • Mad Hatter says:

it is a tricky situation, fines and point deductions, as we know, affect the fans, the very fans who did their utmost to ensure a European Super League did not happen, I’d push for changes on their boards or even at the top, a change of owner

  • jimbo says:

not a great fan of points deduction,as many luton fans might agree?? hitting people financially is all well and good, but the fine would have to be astronomical to have any effect. not really sure of the future.C.O.Y.H.

    • Mad Hatter says:

My view is those who run these clubs need to answer some serious question, the other 14 Premier League clubs have already inferred they do not want those who run these clubs sat around any negotiating table in the future. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.
