Luton – A Competition I’d Rather We Did Not Feature In, But….

It seems to be something that crops up every year, our town being listed as one of the contenders for the worst place to live in the country.

And this year is no different.

The last time I clicked on the web site that runs the competition – vote-for-the-worst-place-to-live-in-england-2023 – Luton was in second place with a mere 4.2% of the votes cast, way behind the leading candidate, Peterborough, that appears to be romping away with the vote, accumulating 9.3% so far.

Now, being competitive, I’ve always wanted to win every competition we’re mentioned in, but do I want us to win this one?

There’s no doubting that our town, when it comes to development, has suffered at the hands of the Council.

Pubs and night clubs have been demolished, replaced by an array of blocks of flats, whilst the shopping centre, that was once supposed to be a shining star in our town centre, now looks aged and lacking the big stores that once dominated it. and made it an attraction.

Such dereliction cannot be changed quickly but there is hope for our town.

The proposed building of the Power Court development will improve one end of the town centre dramatically and could open up numerous avenues for improving our status when it comes to the aforementioned vote.

But, criticism of our town, has opened up the ideal opportunity for me to explore where the majority of the supporters who visit this site, come from:

Morning mh, I have lived in Park Town all my life. An what was once a thriving community with good neighbours. Has become a ghetto I used to play in vauxhall sports ground with tennis courts bowls shooting football cricket. And the highlight of the year. Vauxhall sports day I wonder who remembers them TV stars would come international show jumpers parachuting. Park town is now a jungle murders cannabis farms. You name it. Once you could walk to Bury Park with its thriving shops an not worry. Now I don’t go there for fear. At 16 I went to West Indian clubs for the ska music with mates of all colour as we loved that music. Not able to any longer.

I remember Vauxhall Sports Day, my nan and grandad, who used to live in Cambridge Street, took me and my younger brother and the stars were the cast of Love Thy Neighbour, if I recall right. We used to play on Manor Road Rec, climb all over the old steam engine that was there, paddle in the river and go to the fun fair when it was in town. My dad went to Surrey Street school along with the motorbike racer Phil Read.
