Earlier this week, I opted to launch a new series designed to provide a perspective on who the Hatters support believe should be kept, loaned, or sold.
My first choice in the series was – Carlos Mendes Gomes
Naturally, to gauge your reaction, the article contained a poll, providing three options.
To keep things universal, the same poll features in every one of the subsequent articles.
But with three options to select from:
• Keep Him!
• Loan Him!
and
• Sell Him!
How did you respond to a player who, since signing from Morecambe, last summer, only made 2 Championship starts plus a further 7 from the bench?
Well, it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the player with 22% wanting to Keep Him as opposed to the 26% who wanted to Sell Him.
But by far the most popular choice for the 23-year-old was to Loan Him, an option that received 52% of the vote.
Clearly the belief is that Carlos does have something to offer and that he could, given some regular game time elsewhere, still prove to have a future at Kenilworth Road.
Interestingly, in an article published by Luton Today, the gaffer, Nathan Jones, had nothing but praise for Carlos, remarking:
“Carlos came, with the greatest of respect, from being the star player at Morecambe, but coming into a real high-tempo, aggressive, good Championship side is a different kettle of fish, so he’s taken a bit of time to settle.
“That’s natural, but he’s got real ability.”
However, I can’t help thinking the plethora of signings made this summer have pushed Carlos further down the pecking order and, like the majority that voted, perhaps a season-long loan spell is needed to resurrect that confidence and develop Carlos into a player that can hold his own in the Championship.
