Luton – Support Kept In The Dark

This summer, just like last summer, has been a hectic one for Luton Town in the transfer market.

At the time of writing the Hatters have made a magnificent SEVEN signings, the latest of which was Carlton Morris, from Barnsley.

But it has become noticeable that when it comes to any transfer fee being involved, the term ‘undisclosed fee’ is prevalent.

The ‘Daily Grapevine’ suggests that both before and after the deal for Morris was completed, a fee in the region of £2 million was deemed the going rate.

But still the official release from the club, referred to that familiar term, undisclosed fee.

While viewing social media, I couldn’t but help notice the following post:

Exactly!

I can’t be the only supporter who would like to know how much a new player cost, why is everyone so secretive?

What are we supposed to do when asked who our most expensive signing is?

Do we answer Simon Sluga but it could very well be Carlton Morris?

I know the announcement of a big transfer fee can put undue pressure on a new signing, but if he’s good enough then what’s the problem.

So far, the Hatters have brought:

• Alfie Doughty
• Matt Macey
• Louie Watson
• Cauley Woodrow
• Ethan Horvath
• Luke Freeman

and

• Carlton Morris

to the club, but although Luton have been keen to snap up players who are out of contract and no fee is involved, does anyone, apart from the Luton Town hierarchy, have any idea as to what our total expenditure has been so far this summer?

I’m guessing not!

It’s not announced so other clubs don’t know what we’ve spent. It’s the right thing to do in football as we don’t want to give clubs an idea of what we’ve spent & therefore give them an idea of what we CAN spend. That’s the key, as if they know what we can spend, they know they can squeeze us for more & more money. It’s not hard to get, and as football fans we really don’t NEED to know these things, especially as most football fans don’t even understand the finances involved in the game.

    • Mad Hatter says:

good points Cameron, but once the window closes surely these fees should be revealed!

    • Big Bob says:

      Absolute tosh.

Agents will know what we spent and so will other clubs.

Players talk, agents talk, chairmen talk.

The only people who don’t know are the fans

All I can say is after all our mismanagement woes an financial irregularities. As long as the owners can keep us from the notice of the authorities when the figures are checked. An we are now recognised as being one of the best run financial clubs in England the owners are doing their job. An much as we fans want to know figures is that more important than a well run viable club. I suggest not

    • Mad Hatter says:

Good point Chris, I’m just intrigued to know who cost what!

      • Chris winter says:

We all would!!!. You know I’ve been a supporter since 64 an in all that time just because a figure is quoted for a signed player is it really true? Only the players an club knows. Unless a player reveals in his autobiography the truth. As a former boot boy mig still with ties to them. I’m a deep thinker due to my love of my club. Yes I will chuck in a mischievous comment to stir things up. But I have only seviorly chriticised one player Morrell who deserves it. These owners have so far not put a foot wrong. If they have to sell adebayo to balance the books. Or they have realised that finances will be needed to get us into power court an promotion is the way forward. Then until its proven unstastainable. Then worrying about who cost what is irrelevant.

  • Danny says:

morning MH, i agree it would be nice to know what we have actually paid for our record signing, however, revealing player transfer fees once the 1st transfer window closes as suggested would be counter productive when you consider the 2nd transfer window opens only a few months later

  • Rich says:

Why do we need to know? Its nice ok, but very rarely do Luton seem to do a flat fee, it seems to be all add ons, sell on clauses etc etc so a fee may not actually be know till a player leaves. Maybe Morris and Woodrow had relegation or non promotion release clauses at a set fee… who knows! Real life Football finance is not like championship manager!

  • Djs says:

I have no major complaint with fees being undisclosed, although clubs, players and agents all know them.
My beef is with the lengths of contracts being a secret. Last summer I looked up details of transfers with championship clubs, and we were the only club who kept contract lengths secret. Again, everyone knows except for the supporters.

I think this probably relates to team harmony. No Billy Big B*ll*cks antics from individuals upsetting the dressing room

  • Steve Bahrain says:

Wky Watford went to Rome to see the Pope….
He then turned them into an Italian teams hand puppet and then started sacking their managers every other week…

  • jimbo says:

regarding finances, just worry what your pie and a pint cost. it doe#s seem strange that luton keep it secret, but do i care, not a jot. got quite a few comments though. COYH.

  • nadine dorrie says:

This might be the most “luton” article ever. The club are more successful than at any point in 30 years and somehow an idiot finds a reason to have a moan. I’m sorry if not disclosing fees means you can’t write articles about budgets, but right now 2020’s policy seems to be delivering, so if it ain’t broke, why fix it.

  • Chris paul says:

Looks like mh has inadvertently barred me from the site.!!!!

  • Chris Paul says:

If I apologise mh, can I be let back 😂😂😂😂

    • Mad Hatter says:

Oops! Not sure how that has happened, I have no control over that, can you use the account you’ve posted the above on?

  • Chris winter says:

I can if I have to will try old one again first.
