Luton Town – So Near But So Far As Villa Hit Late Winner

What a cruel sport this wonderful game of ours can be and often at the most inconvenient time.

Yesterday, at Kenilworth Road, the Hatters, at half-time, looked to be dead and buried, with Aston Villa leading 2-0 and, seemingly playing us off the park with their slick pass-and-move football allied with some good finishing by Ollie Watkins.

Indeed, but for some decent saves by Thomas Kaminski, the deficit could have been 3 or 4-0.

But a superb half-time team talk and changing a few player positions saw Luton Town come out like a different team.

With the momentum growing Aston Villa were pegged back with two goals in approximately five minutes, with Chong stabbing the ball home from close range and Morris meeting a superb free kick from Doughty to slot the ball home.

Aston Villa looked rattled, and it only looked to be a matter of time before the Hatters hit the winner.

But ‘Lady Luck’ wasn’t looking down on us and Digne ghosted in at the far post to hand the visitors the three points and leave the Hatters faithful stunned into silence.

Before that late, late winner, it looked very much as if my pre-match forecast of a draw was going to be correct, but such is life.

Although gutted by the manner in which the game ended, overall, Luton Town are in no worse a position than before the game started with two of those teams, we’re hoping to drag into the relegation battle, Everton and Nottingham Forest also losing at home, to West Ham United and Liverpool respectively.

However, with a trip to Selhurst Park, to take on Crystal Palace, next up, it does increase the pressure for the Hatters to get that much-needed next win after four consecutive Premier League defeats.

I see you saw pretty much what I saw mh I put my opinion on the team sheet page.

We thought scoring goals would be the problem. But we have as many as Man U. They have 24 points more than us, so I guess our real problem is not being good enough in defence. Like everyone I think we play exciting football but it needs a good foundation. That means a solid defence. We can’t expect the attack to save our frail defence.

we have the foundation of our defence injured. some long term, some with niggles. simple defensive errors, are being exploited by top players in top teams. yet still we fight back ,and score some wonderful goals. the games we have lost by one goal is true testament to our ,never say die beleif. whatever happens this season, it has been a pleasure to see our team stun some very big teams, with very big players. special shout for mengi. what a pitbull of a player he is. I agree with all you say Jimbo. I like most others have been proud of how the team has developed. But I still think our defence somehow needs to be more solid. Perhaps midfield needs to be closer to them and all try to move as a collective.
