Back in December 2021, our opponents this weekend, featured in our ‘Played For Both’ series.
Our article – they-played-for-both-blackpool – produced a starting XI that, on their day, could have been a formidable outfit, with the chosen XI reproduced below:
Goalkeeper – Les Sealey
Defender – Matt Jackson
Defender – Alex Baptiste
Defender – Emerson Boyce
Defender – Steve Davis
Midfielder – Adrian Forbes
Midfielder – Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall
Midfielder – Elliot Lee
Striker – Bob Hatton
Striker – Paul Dickov
Striker – Mike Newell
Substitute – Kevin Foley
Manager – Allan Brown
Following the publication of the article, several visitors to our site pointed out that Marc Cullen and Tom Ince could also have been considered for a place in the XI, while it was also pointed out that Allan Brown, named as the manager, could also have been selected for the team.
Reflecting on the team, I can remember, as a youngster, idolising Bob Hatton. The moustached, physical and rugged striker was the epitome of what an old-fashioned striker should be.
During his time with Luton Town, 1978-1980, Bob made 82 league appearances for the Hatters, scoring 29 goals before being sold to Sheffield United.
But what are your memories of those chosen for this ‘Played For Both’ XI?

Mark Cullen….
Bob Hatton was very instrumental in the early development of Brian stein. Helped make him the player he became …
I also idolised Bob Hatton in those days. When my then wife nagged me to buy her a cocker spaniel puppy back in 1979 ,I agreed but only if we could call him Bobby ! Much later ,I had the honour of interviewing him for the “Footballer ” magazine -sadly,now long defunct.
