Don Hutchison and Paul Peschisolido were the goalscorers in a match which seemed more like a pre-season friendly than a competitive one, but The Cobblers hardly tested Luton.

Hutch was first to a loose ball, after Andrews’ header was saved by Bunn in the Northampton goal, to score in the 12th minute and Luton were in cruise control mode for the rst of the game.

As manager Kevin Blackwell said afterwards, there were several players needing a game and it gave him the opportunity to do that without compromising his wish to win the game.

Kevin Blackwell made six changes from Saturday’s starting line-up. David Forde, Chris Coyne, Darren Currie, Matthew Spring and Paul Furlong were rested and DAve Edwards was on International duty.

Into the side came Brill, Fojut, Hutchison, Robinson, Ahmet Brkovic and Calvin Andrew, who all gave a good account of themselves. Once Blackwell had covered himself as to the rules of the competition, to play at least six players who had played the majority of league game to date, he took off David Bell and gave Paul McVeigh his chance to play 70 minutes.

Paul Peschisolido got his wish to have a run out after a lay-off with an ankle injury, and he scored with his first touch, coming on as a half time substitute for Drew Talbot.

Robinson strode through the midfield slipped a precise pass into the run of the Canadian striker and he hit a beauty past the exposed Bunn.

Northampton had a few chances late on as Luton took their foot off the gas pedal, but in general it was an easy win against a passionless Cobblers team.

In his first game in Luton colours the young Polish centre back Jaraslaw Fojut looked calm and assured under what little pressure he received and looked as though he was comfortable in possession and will be a useful addition to the squad, at least until January when his initial loan spell ends.

LUTON: Brill, Keane, Fujot, Perry, Goodall, Brkovic, Robinson, Hutchison, Bell (McVeigh 22), Talbot (Peschisolido 45), Andrew (Morgan 86). Subs: Coyne, O’Leary.

ORTHAMPTON: Bunn, Hughes, Doig (Crowe 28), Larkin, May, Johnson, Dolman, Dyer (Gilligan 68), Jones, Russell, Hubertz (Kirk 55). Subs: Holt, Dunn.
