Luton – One Tribute Only But Who?

Image for Luton – One Tribute Only But Who?

Previously, here on Vital Luton Town, we have dabbled with the possibility of the four stands at the Power Court development, being named after former players.

Our article – harford-moore-hill-and-one-other – covered the fact that the consensus was that the stands should be named after Mick Harford, John Moore and Ricky Hill, plus one other.

But whilst I remain convinced that Power Court will prove to be a wonderful theatre for the Hatters to pursue their dreams and ambitions, I have another intriguing proposition.

As a regular visitor to grounds around the country, as I pursue what is the all-consuming passion of football, I have noticed that several grounds have a statue of a legend in close proximity.

Typical example that immediately spring to mind being:

• Bobby Moore – Wembley
• Billy Bremner – Leeds United
• Peter Osgood – Chelsea
• George Best, Bobby Charlton, Dennis Law – Manchester United

Indeed, our opponents yesterday, Preston North End, have a wonderful statue of the late, great Tom Finney.

Which leads me on to the crux of this article.

If the Power Court development could include a statue of ONE Hatters legend, who should it be?

Hi all, this is very difficult as Danny has rightly suggested Joe Payne. But for me one person stands out and he put years of service in the club as a player coach assistant manager. The manager who got us into Europe with our highest ever finish. I know we never got to play there because of hysel stadium. An continued as a radio pundit on our games that man deserves a statue John Moore

I think Gordon Turner, his goal tally for the club will never be beaten.

  • Chris winter says:

Hi all, while the other names are worthy Payne for his feat Turner his record. Neither has been a constant at the club for 50yrs as John Moore has champion winner as player an the rest. That is a club legend

Hi all, just heard the dreadful news that Alan Slough has died. People of a certain vintage will remember how good he an his side kick Bruce rioch were for luton. One of the toughest midfield pairings I’ve seen at luton R. I. P

    R.I.P Alan slough….what a player…

    RIP Alan Slough

Many great names are already mention. However, over the 60 years I have supported The Hatters, the greatest and most emotional game I saw was away at Maine Road. I would choose Raddy Antic. Went onto do great things, but never forgot LTFC, loved the club, and recently passed away. He would get my vote.

  • Baz says:

Has to be Harford surely? Not just for his immense presence on the pitch, and great goal to game ratio, but the way he has helped and supported LTFC in whatever capacity he has been asked. To me, Mick opitimises everything good about us…..true Legend!

    • Chris winter says:

Hi baz, Harford is the only man to challenge John Moore for length of service to the club may be both should have a statue
