Luton – Harford, Moore, Hill And One Other

Not too long ago, here at Vital Luton Town, we asked you for your thoughts on a very pertinent subject.

Our article – who-is-worthy-of-this-accolade – concentrated on the forthcoming, much anticipated, Power Court development, something the club has needed, and the support has yearned for.

We wanted to know who you thought deserved the ultimate accolade and have one of the four stands named after them.

The response saw a plethora of ex-players / managers names suggested, players / managers who have all served the club well.

But, as is often the case, some got more votes than others and, a lot later than I originally anticipated, I can reveal who you would like the stands named after.

Topping the suggestions were:

• Mick Harford
• John Moore
• Ricky Hill

I think you will agree, three worthy nominations.

But, when it comes to the fourth stand, several people received an equal numbers of suggestions, namely:

• Joe Payne
• David Preece
• Gordon Turner

Clearly, if the board do go down the route of naming the stands after those who served us so well, it will be a difficult choice.

But could there be another solution?

Vital Luton reader, Jim, is of the opinion that the stands should be named after years:

– The 2020 Stand – They saved the club
– The 1988 Stand – They all deserve a stand
– The 2008 Stand – Let us not forget where we fell to
– The 2040 Stand – Nicknamed the Orange stand – the future’s bright (rename that the 2050 stand nearer the time)

Now that, in my opinion is not a bad idea.

Any thoughts on the subject matter would be greatly appreciated in the comment facility beneath this article.

Morning mh, with regard to naming the 4th stand. In a previous vote I seem to remember that most people wanted the new stadium to be called the 2020 stadium. That takes out one of options. An personally I would rather honour a former legend of the club with a stand.

The Graham French stand. The most skilful player we ever had & he scored one of footballs greatest ever goals!

  • Graham Webster says:

    The Bob Morton Stand.
A one-club man who played more games for the club than anyone in history and probably won’t ever be overtaken.

  • Ian Goodwin says:

Great debate, personally – Hill and Harford stand, Pleat and Moore stand, Bobbers Stand, 2020 Stand, all at the Hatters Stadium.

How about a call out for John Still? This man rescued us from the bleak outback of non league where others had failed. If it wasn’t for JS who knows how long it could have taken for us to reclaim our football league status? You only have to look at some of the teams there now like Wrexham etc who have been struggling for years to get back up. I & I’m sure many more of us hatters fans will be eternally grateful to John for what he did for this great club in reversing the misfortune we suffered on that terrible day we lost our league status. Ps by the way David mentioned Graham French, what a player he was, loved watching him too.
