Luton – A Tough Task Awaits Us

Although the Hatters still have one EFL Championship game left, this season, against Hull City at Kenilworth Road, I can’t help looking towards the play-offs.

Yesterday, I published an article relating to who will fill the 5th and 6th places in the EFL Championship table and thereby joining Middlesbrough and us in the play-offs – pick-any-one-from-five – Following the publishing of the article, one regular visitor to the site, Trevor Bradley, pointed out an interesting fact.

With the table currently standing as thus, with one game to go:

5 – Coventry City – 69 points
6 – Millwall – 68 points
7 – Sunderland – 66 points
8 – West Bromwich Albion – 66 points
9 – Blackburn Rovers – 66 points

Trevor pointed out that of the FIVE teams still in contention to finish 5th and 6th, Luton have only beaten one of those teams, in the home and away fixtures this season.

Investigating Trevor’s comment, it seems he is exactly right, as the results from this season show:

Coventry City

• Luton Town 2 Coventry City 2
• Coventry City 1 Luton Town 1

Millwall

• Luton Town 2 Millwall 2
• Millwall 0 Luton Town 0

Sunderland

• Luton Town 1 Sunderland 1
• Sunderland 1 Luton Town 1

West Bromwich Albion

• West Bromwich Albion 0 Luton Town 0
• Luton Town 2 West Bromwich Albion 3

Blackburn Rovers

• Luton Town 2 Blackburn Rovers 0
• Blackburn Rovers 1 Luton Town 1

It goes to show that although we’ve secured 3rd place in the EFL Championship table, there is still a tremendous amount of work to do to reach the play-off final, let alone claim a place in the Premier League, at Wembley.

But it isn’t a challenge we should fear, after all, looking on the flip side of the coin, out of the FIVE teams in contention, only West Bromwich Albion have beaten us!
