Ron Davies – RIP

Sad news has reached us about the death of one of our former players.

Now you may have to ask your parents about this player but I can recall my own father waxing lyrical about the 1962 when a certain Ron Davies came to Kenilworth Road.

My father, who had an eye for a decent footballer, used to tell me about a 20 year-old who arrived at Kenilworth Road as a bit of an unknown raw novice, but a player who scored 21 goals in 29 appearances.

He also told me of his disappointment that after a mere 3 games the following season he was sold to Norwich, something that saw him often speculate how Luton might have done if the youngster had been kept hold of.

But it wasn`t to be, Ron Davies was to continue to score, almost at will, for the Norfolk side before they too succumbed to pressure to sell him with Davies moving to Southampton and becoming acknowledged as one of the finest exponents of the art of the centre forward.

Davies died one day short of his 71st birthday, a player I never had the pleasure to watch, in the flesh, wearing a Hatters shirt but one, as I`ve already mentioned, my own departed father used to wax lyrical about.
