Sods law is it not?

I thought when we drew Manchester United, at home, in the League Cup, fate had give us a kick in the nether region with the lucrative cup tie having to be played behind-closed-doors but for something similar to happen twice in one season almost defies belief.

Sat in front of the television, watching Peter Crouch bend over to pick the balls out of the contraption used, these days, to make the draw, fate dealt us a severe blow.

With only a handful of teams still to be drawn, as soon as #27, Chelsea, came out, you just knew that #26, Luton Town, would follow and indeed it did.

A trip to Stamford Bridge would have been a splendid day out with a travelling army of 6000 raucous Haters filing the Shed End, to cheer on the lads.

A few beers down the Kings Road ahead of the game and a train ride of just 30 minutes into St Pancras would have seen a wonderful day had by all.

Plus, a full house at Stamford Bridge would have resulted in rich financial pickings for the Hatters.

But this damn pandemic has put a halt to that!

Instead, we will all have to be content with huddling around the television hoping the game is screened live.

On the surface, the game looks a difficult one for Luton, but Chelsea’s recent form is nothing to write home about.

Frank Lampard has presided over a poor festive period where Premier League points have been hard to come by in a poor run that has only been temporarily halted with a 4-0 FA Cup win over Morecambe at the weekend.

If the Hatters approach the game in the right frame of mind Chelsea could be there for the taking and Luton could provide one of the upsets of the round.

If that is the case then Luton, thanks to the double-headed draw that took place last night, could be contemplating another away trip, a 5th round tie against the winners of the tie between two Championship high-flyers, Norwich City and Barnsley.

But, once the furore is all over, you just know things will revert back to normal in the cups next season, there will be no glamour ties against Manchester United or Chelsea, it will be the likes of Birmingham and MK Dons we will be drawn against!
