Continuing our summer-long mini-series, I have decided to stick with the era from which the previous in the series came from, the 1970’s.

Last time out, I focussed on – Ron Futcher. Today, the attention switches to another player who played for us in that memorable season when we returned to top-flight football, Jimmy Husband.

Husband was born in the north-east, a native of Newcastle upon Tyne, but it was with Everton that he established himself in the professional ranks.

Joining the youth teams, the highlight of Husband’s career with the blue half of Merseyside came when he was part of the side that won the old First Division in 1969/1970, during that season Husband made 30 appearances and scored 6 goals.

Luton secured his services in the summer of 1973 and in our one season return to top-flight football Husband made 33 appearances and scored on 3 occasions, the goals coming against Chelsea (h), Leicester City (h) and Birmingham City (a).

His Hatters career spanned the 1973 – 1978 during which he made 143 league appearances and scored 44 goals.

After his Luton career came to an end, Husband moved to the USA and played for Memphis Rogues, Cleveland Force and Oklahoma City Slickers.

Husband was never an out-and-out striker and was deployed in a role behind the striker, adept at keeping possession, I can always remember that whenever Luton had a throw-in, in the opponent’s half, it would be Husband that made himself available to receive the ball.

The clip below shows Husband scoring for Luton in a home fixture against Leicester City on 12th April 1975, it was the game in which Keith Weller scored one of the greatest own goals ever.

Hi all I remember Alan West and Jimmy husband conjuring up a free kick, can’t remember against who…but West flicked it over the wall and Jimmy ran round the back and buried it in the net at the oak road end…natural goal scorer….

Wish I could recall who it was against….
