Luton Town – They Played For Both – Liverpool

This weekend, the Hatters welcome Liverpool to Kenilworth Road for a hugely anticipated Premier League fixture.

As is the norm, I thought I’d delve into the Vital Luton Town archives and do one of our regular – They Played For Both Revisited – articles.

However, despite an intensive search, I couldn’t trace the original article to revisit it!

Therefore, I decided to start from scratch and compile an original article.

But, in doing so, it became blatantly obvious why there was no original article.

My attempts, as can be seen below, only resulted in me unveiling SIX players that met the criteria:

Goalkeeper – Alec Chamberlain

Defender – Richard Money
Defender
Defender
Defender

Midfield – Phil Boersma
Midfield – Don Hutchison
Midfield – Tom Ince

Forward – Paul Walsh
Forward
Forward – Peter Spiring (suggested by Con Hope)

Now, either I’ve had a serious brain block or I’m missing something obvious.

Surely there must be more than SIX players who have played for both Luton Town and Liverpool?

Therefore, I’m asking for your help in completing the starting XI.

If you can help simply drop a name (or two) in the comment facility beneath this article.

No surprise mh only 8 players in history two obviously missed Bobby Thompson an Lloyd Jones. The others are bill Perkins for £200 in1899 Peter platt 1904 undisclosed Harold Fitzpatrick 1907 undisclosed. See even then we didn’t release transfer sums mh so nothing changed there 😂😂😂😂😂

I knew there weren’t many but just thought I’d had a golden oldie moment and missed the obvious. As for the fees, like you say, nothing changes!

    Jimmy Husband

  • Graham Webster says:

NOT Jimmy Husband! Silly old fool. 🤣

  • Tony Byfield says:

How about Phil Boersma I think he was at Liverpool at some stage?

  • Neale Bray says:

    Alan Harper

Great shout, born in Liverpool, played for Liverpool youth team but never made a league appearance for the club

  • Neale Bray says:

Can we make a legitimate case for Steve McNulty? He certainly was in Liverpool’s youth in his late teens. If he’s valid, he’s big enough to cover all positions simultaneously.

  • Nick says:

Lloyd jones. Steve mcnulty, david moli, bedtian isakz?

  • Mark says:

Mike Newell played for Liverpool’s youth team.

According to the man himself, he went in to see Bob Paisley and told him that he wanted to take some time off to do his ‘A’-levels. Paisley told him that wasn’t the kind of attitude the club were looking for and let him go permanently.

Of course, he could be spinning us one …

The late Besian Idrizaj was loaned from Liverpool

  • MATTHEW says:

Peter Spiring was one of our worst signings ever, as it happens. Completely ineffectual.

    • Gerry C says:

I never understood why Harry Haslam bought Spiring and for such a large fee (at the time) of maybe £60,000. The player had started his career Bristol City and haven’t been a prolific goalscorer there, and he did very little whilst at Liverpool and never broke through to the first team.

At the time Spiring arrived at Luton. We were desperate for goals to stay up in the top division, and even then I reckon we should have spent the money on buying an older but more established player (such as Bob Hatton) rather than taking a risk, one that did not pay off.

I think Spiring left for a very cheap fee and he joined Hereford in Division 4 and although he played for them for the best part of a decade, I think he played most of his games for them as a full back.

      • Mark says:

One of “hhhhmm?” transfers. Liverpool signed him for 60k, he doesn’t play for the first team and comes to us a season or so later for 70k … am I missing something?
