Luton Town – The Thoughts Of Honest Rob – Newcastle (a)

I can’t even begin to understand how much of an emotional roller-coaster ride being a football manager is.

Yesterday, up at St James Park, those Hatters supporters, up in the gods, cheering their side on probably couldn’t see the emotions our gaffer went through, such is the distance between them and the dugouts, but Rob, although he does well to hide his emotions, almost as if he’s playing poker, would have felt his heart pounding as his team came from behind (twice) to lead and then get pegged back.

But, if asked, I’m sure Rob would have, before kick-off, accepted a point in the cauldron that is St James Park.

Ater such a game, in his post-match interview, as reported by the BBC, the gaffer, understandably, had a lot to say, starting with his thoughts on the performance:

“It is very mixed. I am very proud and pleased with the performance. We were brave. They came back quickly and the way we stayed composed and didn’t go under was pleasing. That could have happened in this cauldron of an atmosphere. We even had a chance to win it at the end. It was an even game, and a great game.”

I doubt whether Newcastle United, or their supporters, believed little-old Luton would have the gall to turn up and be far from content in settling for a point, possibly grinding out a dull draw, but prepared to go for broke.

Continuing, the gaffer then commented about our attacking style of play, somewhat abandoning the cautious approach displayed earlier in the season:

“I have said to the players, this is the best way for us to get results. The players have really bought in. We have been this way before, but it suits who we are and what we are. It suits the whole football club to be honest. It gives us more threat and upsets the flow of the opposition.”

Indeed, it did, when Luton Town went 4-2 up, St James Park was silenced, not many teams can claim to have done that to the famously vociferous Geordie support!

Sadly, our attacking intent did let us down with 4 goals being conceded, forcing Rob to remark:

“I think when you look at their goals there were some things we could have done. You just need to see certain moments out. Some of the actions for their goals we could have done better at. They will be doing the same as well. There are always areas to improve. We are human beings and we make mistakes and we will always make mistakes.”

We will, but if we can continue to score as often as we are, I sense a party down at Kenilworth Road, some time in May.

What a game! Neutrals are now sitting up and taking notice after that magnificent spectacle. Who would have thought three games into the season that the Hatters would be silencing St James’s Park with a four-goal onslaught. It’s a pity high-spending Forest earned a point today, but if Newcastle do us a favour with another four goals at the weekend and City put Everton to the sword we could be sitting pretty if we can replicate current form against Sheffield. As Jimbo would say COYH 🙂

Hi al, we would all love a repeat performance of last week, but it’s Sheffield utd an I predict a dog fight game they don’t want us playing our football so expect time wasting from the beginning and although wilder says he won’t come to park the bus believe that if you will. I will be happy with a win however it comes

Has anyone noticed how Ross has passed through to adebayo, to score against Brighton & Newcastle, the resemblance to how Ricky Hill used to find Bruno. Had a look at a few earlier. Very similar….

Good obo Alan but is it we haven’t had the players capable of that surely not or the changes Rob has made to the way we play intriguing question.

  • Alan says:

    Bit of both I think.
