Luton Town – The Long Road Back

Another piece of news that caught my eye earlier in the week related to a former Luton Town keeper.

Back in the 2021/2022 season, the Hatters were in the midst of a goalkeeping crisis and had to take advantage of the emergency loan rule.

One of the keepers that arrived at Kenilworth Road was Jed Steer, who was on the books of Aston Villa.

In his first game for the Hatters, Steer kept a clean sheet in a 3-0 win away to Cambridge United.

He subsequently went on to make two more league appearances for Luton Town and looked to be a more than competent goalkeeper.

Sadly, on his fourth appearance for the club, a FA Cup tie against Chelsea, at Kenilworth Road, Steer picked up a nasty injury, tearing his Achilles tendon and had to return to Aston Villa for treatment.

Unfortunately, the injury was so severe that his career, as we mentioned in the following article – spare-a-thought – looked to be over and he was not to play for Aston Villa again and despite being their longest serving player he was released.

But Jed never gave up when it came to making a return and it was announced, by the BBC, earlier in the week, that the 31-year-old had been signed by Peterborough United on a short-term loan deal to ease their own goalkeeping crisis.

It’s worth making note that when Jed makes his debut for Peterborough United, it will be his first appearance since he suffered that aforementioned injury playing for Luton Town against Chelsea, a considerable period of time.

Although there is no doubt the Hatters have a class keeper between the posts, in Thomas Kaminski, but could things have been different if Jed had not of got injured, could his emergency loan spell have developed into something more permanent?

I’ll let you ponder over that finishing line!
