Some four years ago, in the early days of my tenure as editor of this site, I ran a series that, I believe, went down well with the readership.

On an ad-hoc basis I delved into the archives of our fine football club, to produce a starting XI based on, in most cases, surnames beginning with the same letter of the alphabet.

Naturally, with the more obscure letters, I had to vary the criteria slightly.

Now, four years on and with so much having happened to our fine club, having climbed, in spectacular fashion from the EFL to the Premier League, I thought I’d revisit the series and what better way to start than with the letter ‘A’.

Back in April 2020, the team I selected, with the original article available through the following link – luton-town-the-a-xi

read as thus:

• Milija Aleksic

• Graham Alexander
• Raddy Antic
• Ed Asafu-Adjaye
• James Ayres

• Peter Anderson
• Marc Aizlewood
• Lee Angol

• Trevor Aylott
• Adrian Alston
• John Aston

Putting the old grey matter to the test, I came up with the names of three players who might be considered for inclusion in the revised starting XI:

• Elijah Adebayo
• Mads Andersen
• John McAtee (on loan at Barnsley)

But, with McAtee being on loan, at Barnsley and yet to make an impression in a Luton Town shirt, since signing from Grimsby Town, my view is that only spaces for Adebayo and Andersen should be found.

After deliberation I opted to place Andersen in the heart of the defence in place of Ed Asau-Adjaye, however when it came to a place for Adebayo, it took a lot more deliberation as to who should be removed from the aforementioned original starting XI.

In the end, I chose to swap Adebayo for Adrian Alston, primarily because I can recall some disparaging remarks the Australian international made about his spell with us back in the 1970’s, therefore making my revised starting XI read as thus:

• Milija Aleksic

• Graham Alexander
• Raddy Antic
• Mads Andersen
• James Ayres

• Peter Anderson
• Marc Aizlewood
• Lee Angol

• Trevor Aylott
• Elijah Adebayo
• John Aston

But the big question remains – Have I omitted anyone you believe the starting XI would be better served by their inclusion?

As usual, it would not surprise me as I do, sometimes, seem to miss the glaringly obvious.
