Luton Town – Changing The Rules

I’ve always objected to any changes, to the rules, to our beautiful game.

However, there has been one exception this year.

Yesterday, in an article – time-to-review-var-itself – I berated the introduction and continuation of the Video Assistant Review system.

But, today, I’m praising the decision to increase the amount of stoppage time now being played.

Okay, there may be gasps when the fourth official lifts the board and circa 12 minutes is announced, but time wasting / game management has always been something that has annoyed me.

Now, thankfully, an attempt is being made to reduce time wasting.

On Saturday afternoon, Sheffield United were leading 1-0, at Tottenham, a surprise scoreline.

My Spurs supporting mates, in the pub that evening, told me how the Blades had done their utmost to run down time, desperate to hang on to a crucial win.

Sadly, their plan was to come unstuck.

With a healthy amount of stoppage time announced, Spurs went on to score in the 90+8 and 90+10 minutes to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat.

Justice had been served!

But, in my view, one other aspect of the rules could do with being altered.

Once the extent of the stoppage time has been announced, further substitutions should be banned, some might call it game management, I call it blatant time wasting.

But what are your feelings on the laws of the game?

What changes, given the chance, would you like to be introduced?

Please feel free to have your say in the comment facility beneath this article.

if a player is injured in extra time, are you saying he cannot be substituted. yellow carding time wasters will hopefully help to stop it. watching the notts forest game last night, burnley have time wasting down to a fine art. and there goalie was the worst offender. there possesion style of play ,with players standing still with the ball at there feet, waiting for something to happen, infuriates fans, but its there game plan to waste time. If they are standing still in possession, then that’s not time wasting as the ball is in play. Nothing you can do about that, except close them down & make them play it…..

Don’t book the offender, book the Captain. Therefore if more than once offense of timewasting the Captain gets sent off, would soon stop offenders.

No team would want to drop to 10 men even if protecting a small lead
