Luton Town Announce First Summer Signing

The law of probability suggested that the moment I took a snooze, sorry power nap, news would filter through that Luton had made their first new signing of the summer.

And that has proven to be exactly the case with the Official Site confirming that Chiedozie Ogbene had put pen-to-paper on a contract with the Hatters.

Ogbene, a subject of a piece of transfer speculation we covered in the following article – luton-town-linked-with-championship-striker-as-premier-league-preparations-continue – will officially become a Luton Town player when his current contract with the Championship side, Rotherham United, expires on 30-June-2023.

With the player being out of contract, no transfer fee will be involved.

The 26-year-old, who is a Republic of Ireland international, scored on 9 occasions in the Championship last season while also providing 4 assists.

Able to play as a winger or striker, Rob Edwards, among many things he had to say about his addition to the squad, and as reported by our referenced source, is quoted as having remarked:

“Chieo is a really exciting addition and is someone we’ve liked for a while.

“We got to look at him a lot last season in preparing to play against him and his Rotherham team, and in my opinion, he was their best and most threatening player.

“We actually did a reasonable amount of work on stopping him as well as part of our game planning, so you know when you are doing that, he should be on a list for possible recruitment.

“We know we are going to need some real athleticism in the Premier League, and he knows how to use it. He’s flexible, and he’s going to be able to play through the middle as a forward, but also as a wide one, if we wanted to play with wide forwards. He can play a couple of positions.”

Here at Vital Luton Town, I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing Cheidozie every success at our wonderful club as we strive to not only survive in the Premier league but also cause a few shocks.

Welcome to Luton Town Football Club young man.

Sorry if I sound unenthusiastic an I want to give the guy a chance.but for me this signing is underwhelming.he is not a prolific scorer an to my mind this shows sweet wants to look further than this season as he’s said up to 5yrs in the future in other words if we are relegated next season we have players in place for the championship again. Not what I want to see or hear.

    • Mad Hatter says:

Although it is hard to impress, up front in a struggling side, but Edwards spoke about nullifying the threat he presented when Luton played Rotherham, if, and not being disrespectful to our defenders, we could do that, most Premier League sides could also do that, could they not?

  • Alan says:

Give him chance…..in mick we trust….

  • Mick says:

Fair comment, give him a chance. If you can’t then close your eyes and put your fingers in your ears that should do the trick

  • Andrew says:

Don’t forget carlton Morris was not a great forward but look what happened in the season . I am not saying he will do the same and score twenty odd goals but give him a chance . Coyh

  • Peter Scott says:

We forget that the football coaches at LTFC can create better players out of those that come to us. Look at Morris and Adabeyo for example.

Guys guys guys we didn’t say he wasn’t good enough just I don’t see sweet or Mick’s adding a little bit of quality in this signing an we did say give the guy a chance. But this to me yet again is looking to the future not what we are facing this season is it that hard to understand?

  • Colin says:

Total lack of ambition on the clubs part if these are the kind of signings that we bring in then we have very little chance of staying in the prem

  • Terry says:

Come on guys. This is our first signing and if I understand previous messages from those in charge of recruitment then not all of the new personnel will be million pound players. We need to build a base of footballers capable of playing as a team and I have every confidence in Mick Hartford and his team to add quality. I am certain we will get great recruitment and some very pleasant surprises. In the meantime welcome Chieo to Luton and prove the doubters wrong.

  • Steve Bahrain says:

Only concern is that he is primarily a winger, who can play a strikers role but not prolific… Dare I suggest we have a new system being bedded in for next season?

  • Alan says:

” lack of ambition ” really, 4 promotions in 9 years…..think some need to realise, we didn’t get a bank transfer of 150mil the day after the play off final. Also I’m hearing the club are trying to bring in many players, but it’s not just down to fees and wages, but the clause in the contracts should we be relegated. That’s down to agents, not 2020. We must also understand 2020 were just suppoters when our club very nearly went out of existence. They will not go gun ho and let anything like that happen again. This message board will be awash with criticism next season when, in all likely hood, we lose more than we win as it has already started. Just enjoy the ride, knowing we will be financially sound for many years to come. We punched well above our wait, financially, in the championship and we now have the same fight on our hands in the prem. As Gary sweet said ” no Billy big bollocks” …get behind the team, don’t slag them.

people tend to forget about the agents. they suck lots of cash out of the game. totally agree with alans comments. stay positive and enjoy this incredible roller coaster ride. give 2020 and the club the recognition they deserve, for getting us to were we are now. anything else will be a bonus. as for planning for the future, surely that is the reason we are in the prem, planning started 10 years ago. what ever happens this year ,just enjoy it.COYH.
