The start of a new era begins this afternoon, with Luton Town, without Nathan Jones at the managerial helm, taking on Rotherham United.
Back in May 2021, in our ‘They Played for Both’ series, we featured – Rotherham United
However, after much research, our team lacked a member, a defender, with it being published as thus:
• Goalkeeper – Conrad Logan
• Defender – Scott Griffiths
• Defender – Julian Watts
• Defender – POSITION VACANT
• Defender – Johnny Mullins
• Midfielder – Izzy Brown
• Midfielder – Tony Grealish
• Midfielder – John Seasman
• Striker – Rodney Fern
• Striker – Vic Halom
• Striker – Imre Varadi
• Substitute – Danny Hylton
With a request put out for assistance / players who fitted the criteria, the names of Laurie Sheffield, Peter Holmes and Tony Thorpe were offered up.
Mulling over the situation, I decided that I could generate a starting XI (plus substitute) if I used a bit of poetic licence and changed the formation to 3-4-3.
Therefore, based on that line of thinking, the team now looks as thus:
• Goalkeeper – Conrad Logan
• Defender – Scott Griffiths
• Defender – Julian Watts
• Defender – Johnny Mullins
• Midfielder – Izzy Brown
• Midfielder – Peter Holmes
• Midfielder – Tony Grealish
• Midfielder – John Seasman
• Striker – Rodney Fern
• Striker – Vic Halom
• Striker – Imre Varadi
• Substitute – Danny Hylton
It is, to put it mildly, an interesting selection and I’m not sure how the team would gel or, possibly, perform defensively but Rotherham United appears to be one of those teams that Luton haven’t down that much business with over the decades.
But I couldn’t publish the XI (plus substitute) without mentioning Danny Hylton.
Hylton was a loyal servant for the Hatters and was part of their incredible climb back into the second tier of English football, from non-league.
Danny spent 6 years with Luton making 147 league appearances and scoring on 54 occasions.
Last summer, time was called on his Luton career and he moved up the M1 to Northampton Town, where he put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal.
As I write, Hylton has failed, despite making 10 appearances, to score for the Cobblers but I’ve no doubt his style of play will have already endeared him to the Northampton support.
