Luton – The Strange Workings Of Televised Football

Back in late November, here at Vital Luton Town, we covered the fact that Luton Town had been drawn against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup 3rd round draw.

Our subsequent article – and-so-wigan-it-is-then-in-the-fa-cup – tried its best to find some positive points relating to the draw.

Two positive points that we managed to find were that the fixture was a home draw and would be played on a traditional Saturday afternoon with a 15:00 hours kick-off.

However, that is now not the case.

Instead, the tie will kick off at 17:30 as it has been selected for live broadcast overseas!

My with all the games they could have selected from, they choose hours, a run of the mill tie between two Championship clubs.

But, furthermore, I’m led to believe that because it is being broadcast live, those who follow the Hatters on iFollow will, because it is being shown live abroad, will not be able to tune in.

Can anybody confirm if this is correct?

But my biggest gripe is that yet again TV, not even UK TV, has the overwhelming power to decide when games will be played.

Does anyone else share my annoyance?

If its being shown in the country where you live then you cant watch it. If its not being shown then you usually can watch it. I have not missed a game this season as where I live they dont show football.

I agree it’s like the Boxing day game against Norwich. The arm chair watches and ratings come first. But it’s not the television company’s fault its the football clubs who sold their sole to the TV company’s for a bag of Gold. Sane with the Premier League then they moan about the fixtures, they take the money spend it on wages, buying .new players then moan.

When the EFL. (or in this case the FA because it’s the FA Cup) sell the rights to televise matches it’s then in the hands of the TV companies to decide which games and at what times, presumably to fit their schedules, to show them. It’s intensely annoying and frustrating for ordinary fans but there’s absolutely nothing we can do about it.

FA Cup not usually played on iFollow.
Shouldn’t be changing kick offs though if it is the selected match, nonsense.
Plus, if it is an overseas broadcaster, most likely Bein pulling weight and so thank Qatar for their continued interruption into our beautiful game… SportsWashing at its finest
