With no live football to attend, with the Boxing Day clash against Bristol City having been postponed, Soccer Saturday was a must watch programme.
As I may have mentioned, in a previous article – victory-was-ours-for-the-taking – Jeff Stelling did a fantastic job in keeping the show a must-watch programme, despite the huge reduction in fixtures to monitor and comment on.
But to me the highlight of the show was when Jeff, mentioned that the best Christmas present he could hope to receive was a victory for his beloved Hartlepool away to Mansfield Town.
It was probably a wish many a football fan shared in relation to their own club.
However, after going for the obligatory advertising break, the programme returned with Jeff, with his mobile phone to his ear, supposedly apologising profusely to his wife and trying to assure her that her present was, indeed, the best present he could hope to receive over the festive break, sheer comedy genius.
It will be a sad day, come the end of the season, when Jeff, as he announced earlier this year, hangs up his Sky Sports microphone to seek pastures new, his boots will certainly be huge ones to fill.
Sadly, Jeff did not get his Christmas wish with Hartlepool throwing away a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2!
