Luton – The Generation Gap

Last night, I took a journey back in time, with tickets in hand the wife and I went to see a very unpolitical comedian.

A comedian who due to the ‘wokeness’ of society today is frowned upon but still, for those of a certain age, has the ability to entertain and receive a standing ovation.

But just the journey to St Albans opened my eyes as to just how much society has changed in recent years.

Heading towards the M1 spur road, old haunts such as The King Harry, The Somerset Tavern and The Wyvern were gone, either demolished or utilised for other means, yet entering Harpenden and then St Albans, you notice the difference immediately, pubs I recall from my younger days are still thriving, still alive with the public enjoying themselves why is our town the complete opposite?

Now the jokes told were ‘old school’ and definitely did not suit the woke society we have watched emerge and envelop us in the past few years, but has society changed so much since the comedian I saw was a regular on mainstream television and has it been for the better?

I do not want this article to develop into a raging political, woke argument, I am just using it to show how society has changed, when I was a lad, my late mother frequently used the phrase ‘sticks and stones’ to deflect any criticism aimed in her or her offspring, something that the present generation do not seem able to do.

But if you are in any doubt as to how quickly things are changing you only have to look at the latest request / demand from the club –

Are we heading towards a society where our very mutterings are dictated by woke policy?

Now I may be just deemed as an old-fogey who needs to move with the times, but I am at a stage in life where I am reticent to change and long for the days gone by, am I alone or is there anyone else out there who feels they are being pushed to one side by the evolution of a society that has more ills now than when I was a youngster?

Please feel free to discuss in the comment facility beneath this article.

Morning mh, sadly I have to agree with everything you said. There seemed to be less of every day problems. It was because of one thing called community everyone knew every one for three or four streets around them. Neibours could be relied on to rally round. And the local beat Bobby was there an knew the problem families. All that’s gone we didn’t look on neighbours as black or white just neighbours. An only outsiders from outside our locale were treated with suspicion. An we lived with freedom of speech which no longer exists with the woke generation.
