Luton – That Easter Sunday Flashpoint

It has been a decent Easter weekend so far with a raft of live football matches to while away the hours.

Hopefully, the Hatters can extend their current unbeaten run when they welcome Blackpool to Kenilworth Road, this afternoon.

But, while I’m sat watching the rain saturate my newly mowed front and back lawns waiting for the action to start today, something that happened yesterday has provoked me into writing this article.

Like many others, I was thoroughly entertained watching the 2-2 draw between Liverpool and Arsenal, a result that I feel hands the advantage in the Premier League title race back to Manchester City.

Despite the enthralling action one incident is set to be talked about more than all the others, the moment when the assistant referee, Constantine Hatzidakis, appeared to elbow, in the throat, the Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.

Already there are suggestions doing the rounds that imply Hatzidakis should receive a similar punishment to that received by Mitrovic, who for ushing an official received an 8-game ban that the FA want to see increased.

Now I’m not having any of that!

Being an official is no easy job these days and perhaps we should look at Robertson’s behaviour in the game.

Midway through the half, when the referee, Paul Tierney, gave Arsenal a free kick, near the corner flag in front of The Kop, Robertson clearly disputed the decision and screamed what looked very much like an obscenity in the direction of the assistant referee and got away with it unpunished.

As for the incident itself, I can understand why Hatzidakis reacted as he did, watch carefully as Robertson, from behind, clearly rushes towards the official trying to intimidate him. Clearly, Hatzidakis didn’t know who was behind him, for all he knows it could have been a pitch invader!

And for Robertson to react as he did, I’m firmly in Roy Keane’s corner with the controversial Irishman decreeing that Roberston reacted like a ‘big-baby’ and should have concentrated on his defending.

While I’m on the subject of player behaviour, I’m becoming miffed at the recent trend of players, who have scored, not only celebrating in front of opposition fans but openly goading them, surely that has to be stopped.

Your views on the events of yesterday, at Anfield, would be most welcome, simply have your say in the comment facility beneath this article.

they are both payed professionals and should act accordingly. having said that, assaulting anyone is not acceptable, even if they sometimes deserve it. a shame this game will be remembered for the wrong reasons. hoping we can stuff blackpool today. COYH.

FA not interested in stamping out the confrontation of officials so maybe the officials can sort it out directly… Send anyone approaching officials off unless the captain, will be a few scrappy weekends and then message will be sent.
Love it when players goad the opposing fans, Osho one of my favourite scenes this season! Give it and take it in equal portions…
